As Season 1 of Superman & Lois winds down, the last episode’s reveals that Metropolis has its own version of Marvel’s Secret Invasion.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 1, Episode 14, “The Eradicator,” which aired Tuesday on The CW.
As Season 1 of Superman & Lois winds down, Clark Kent is at his wit’s end, realizing that while he thought he stopped his evil brother, Tal-Rho (Adam Rayner), the villain has become more powerful than ever. This results in a showdown with Tal in Metropolis after the villain officially becomes Eradicator. And while Kal-El might be able to physically slug it out, there’s a shocking revelation in the show’s latest episode, “The Eradicator,” that Metropolis now has its own version of Marvel’s Secret Invasion.
In the Marvel Comic universe, Secret Invasion is an event in which the Skrulls lay dormant on Earth, disguising themselves as powerful people so as to destabilize the planet and take it over. They kill heroes and villains alike, kidnap them and pose as their doppelgangers. Now, Clark has to worry about Metropolis having agents hidden in plain sight, although there’s a twist, as they’re not shape-shifting aliens.
The bombshell comes when the Man of Steel and John Henry Irons touch down in the city after Tal breaks Leslie Larr out from Sam Lane’s prison. But just as they’re about to throw down, Tal commands four soldiers to rise up, and we see normal-looking citizens floating up from the crowd, attacking the heroes. This shock fits with the Eradicator’s new role, as he absorbed a ton of Kryptonian souls from Lara’s orb and is creating an army like his Daxamites in the comics. He and Larr got to Metropolis earlier, seeding out souls and possessing humans, so Clark has to figure out a way to find these people.
The longer he takes, the easier it is for Kryptonian minds to erase the human essences in these vessels. While they’re able to knock the four out, it’s clear that a similar scenario is playing off like when Tal used the Eradicator machine in Smallville, experimenting on humans and planting his people in them.
In this case, it’s a lot more dangerous because Metropolis is one of the key cities in this pocket of the DC Universe so citizens can saunter off to Gotham, work in the media, in hospitals or other influential positions of power as opposed to a small, dusty farm town in Kansas. If some infiltrate the army as well like what happened in Section 7734, all hell will break loose with the secrets there that can be mined against the Man of Steel. If Clark has no idea how to find them, John will need to devise new tech soon as the war has resumed and gone cosmopolitan.
The two-part Season 1 finale of Superman and Lois airs Aug. 17 on The CW.
