As Superman & Lois ends its first season, Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois has been given her most important job yet and it could damage her reputation badly.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for the Superman & Lois Season 1 finale, “Last Sons of Krypton,” which aired Tuesday on The CW.
In Superman & Lois, Elizabeth Tulloch’s Lois has had quite an emotional ride in Season 1. She lost her job after Morgan Edge turned the Daily Planet into his playground, while risking her life to expose his dark secrets as Tal-Rho in Smallville. It’s seen her go from intrepid reporter to badass mom, but as the season ends, Lois has been given her most important job yet.
It’s part-owner of the Smallville Gazette in what could make her the new Perry White. We know Lois has adored Perry as he’s the man who looked after her in so many comics, shows and movies as editor-in-chief of the Planet, so Lois is going to have tall shoes to fill to emulate him.
It comes when Smallville rebuilds after Edge is stopped by Superman and Steel, leaving the town happy to pick up the pieces. Lois tells Chrissy she’s sold her assets in Metropolis to pay for half the paper. It’s enough to stop Chrissy from selling it as they were financially strapped, leading to a celebration.
They worked hard to bring Edge’s empire down in Smallville, evoking days when new media wasn’t clickbait. It inspired Lois, and this is the kind of democracy and press freedom she knows can win other Pultizers. Granted, we don’t know what capacity she’ll be back in as she won’t want to stop reporting, but Lois’ vision will redefine the paper. Chrissy needs her expertise at a boardroom level to hire so it seems like executive Lois is on the move.
Fans can’t wait to see her with new staff and bossing people around, competing with the big guns. With Tal-Rho in prison, the Planet might even become a rival for the dusty Kansas farm town, laying down a template for real journalism. But while it gives Lois a challenge in her career, what’s going to make this job integral is the secrets she’ll have to hide.
She already lied to Chrissy about General Sam Lane and the military’s presence in Smallville, so she will have more cover-ups, conspiracies and theories to tend to to protect her family. It’ll bring her ethics, morals and journalistic integrity into question as she’ll have to guide people away from the Kents, especially as Jordan’s powers are developing.
Last but not least, Superman didn’t tell the world Tal was his brother, so that’s another massive bombshell she’s sitting on, compromising her role as a watchdog for the public and making her a hypocrite. Only time will tell, but while Lois might see this as a dream job, it could stain her professional and personal reputation, and doom the family.
Superman & Lois: The Complete First Season arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on Oct. 19.
