As Superman & Lois returns for Season 2, it continues to make its most important character a prominent co-lead.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 2, Episode 1, “What Lies Beneath,” which aired Tuesday, Jan. 11, on The CW.
With Superman & Lois back for its second season, the Arrowverse series continues to live up to its title by truly sharing the spotlight between its eponymous married couple. While Superman takes point on delivering the high-powered action faster than a speeding bullet, the Man of Steel isn’t the only one out there saving the day, as Lois is finally playing an equally important role in the show’s ongoing narrative. And Lois Lane’s prominence center stage is far overdue, with Lois’ character development the most visible since at least the fan-favorite television series Smallville.
Many Superman stories push Lois more to the periphery as a supporting character while her super-powered spouse stands front and center. Lois herself starred in a long-running comic book series from 1958 to 1974 while performances from actors like Phyllis Coates and Margot Kidder helped propel the character to new, visible heights. Though, Lane in the ’90s television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Superman: The Animated Series, portrayed by Teri Hatcher and Dana Delany, respectively, really became the foundation towards making the character more of a co-lead in Superman’s ongoing stories rather than being relegated to a love interest or damsel-in-distress as she had been portrayed for much of history until that point.
Ever since Elizabeth Tulloch made her debut as Lois in the Arrowverse, she has played a considerably more active role in this particular DC Universe, even going as far as to become a vital figure in a group recruited by the Monitor to save the DC Multiverse in “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” This heightened prominence has only grown more with Lois as a co-lead of Superman & Lois, and Season 2 is promising antagonists to individually challenge Lois and Clark Kent in their own respective ways.
Where Superman & Lois truly excels, however, is its multifaceted approach to its titular couple. Just as Clark is more than simply defined through the lens of Superman, so too is Lois elevated into diverse character directions. The Season 2 premiere demonstrates how much nuance and complexity Tulloch accentuates the character with in her performance. Right from Season 2’s opening scene, Lois is challenged by the sudden arrival of Natalie Irons while the episode builds on Lois’ role as an investigative reporter, a parent and spouse, including a glimpse at how she and Clark approach the dreaded talk with their sons.
Lois Lane is a character stretching as far back as 1938’s Action Comics #1 making her one of the cornerstones in the superhero genre and Superman mythos. Superman & Lois could have ignored all that and simply left Tulloch’s Lois preoccupied with the domestic side of the series’ narrative, but she’s putting herself into harm’s way to uncover Smallville’s sinister secrets and providing a more grounded perspective than the Man of Tomorrow. It was Lois who helped expose what Morgan Edge was up to in the previous season, and Season 2 is poised to give Lois plenty to stay engaged with, from overcoming a past trauma to reminding the world why she is one of the most celebrated journalists in the entire Arrowverse.
To see Lois Lane finally get the development she deserves, Superman & Lois Season 2 airs Tuesdays at 8pm ET/PT on The CW.
