Superman Fans Should Expect More Super Sons in Son of Kal-El

The dynamic has changed between Jon Kent and Damian Wayne, but the Super Sons aren’t going anywhere.

The upcoming Superman: Son of Kal-El series by Tom Taylor and John Timms will focus on Jon Kent taking over the Man of Steel’s role on Earth, but Taylor assures readers, particular Super Sons fans, that Jon won’t be alone in the title.

“Damian [Wayne] isn’t going anywhere,” Taylor said at Comic-Con@Home’s virtual Truth, Justice, and A Better DC Universe: A New Future for The Man of Steel panel Saturday. “For people who fear that, the Super Sons are still going to be that. His best friend is still going to be there.”

DC debuted the ongoing Super Sons comic by Peter J. Tomasi and Jorge Jiménez featuring Jon and Damian in 2017. In that series, the roughly-13-year-old Damian had a few years on the younger Jon. However, Jon had subsequently left Earth to travel the universe with his grandfather Jor-El, and courtesy of some time-traveling hijinks, returned as an older teenager in Brian Michael Bendis and Ivan Reis’ Superman, now giving Jon the age advantage over Damian.

“They’re still actually the same age gap,” Taylor said. “I want to tell all the fans out there it’s just that it’s reversed, so Damian is now 14, Jon is 17. But there’s still the same age gap between the two, so they’ll still be friends.”

“There’ll be a lot more to it, so [there’s] some revenge coming up there, I think,” Taylor joked.

“No, I think I’m hoping Super Sons fans, as one myself and my son is one, will be very happy with what we do in this.”

The dynamic for the two youngsters will be significantly different both in costume and as civilians, as Jon will now be taking the mantle of Superman, while Damian is technically still “just” Robin — a development that’s sure to annoy the tightly strung Damian.
