Superman and the Authority artist Mikel Janín reveals conceptualizations for how Clark Kent could have appeared in Grant Morrison’s new series.
The new series Superman and the Authority will see the Man of Steel adopt a uniform reminiscent of the Kingdom Come series, but artist Mikel Janín reveals that Clark Kent almost donned the full suit — among other alternate possibilities.
The artist posted on Twitter and revealed more concept art on how the hero could have been seen in the series. It seems that Kent will demonstrate his age in a more silver fox look and some of the conceptualized appearances would have seen him go fully grey, both in suit and hair. Also in the running were suits pulled straight from Kingdom Come and other comics.

The more black and white uniforms appear very futuristic, similar to how Superman looked in the Batman Beyond animated series, one even absent of the cape like in the show. The two blue suits have more of the Kingdom Come feel, the one on the left and in the head profile art seemingly taken straight from Alex Ross. The outliers come from the other blue garb and the dark grey ensemble, keeping the Kingdom Come emblems but moving in the directions of the New 52 and Red Son, respectively.
In half of these visualizations, Superman appears only young at heart. He is seen sporting an entirely silver head of hair and beard, unlike the touch of grey the series chose to go with. The last concept art page sees Kent taking a cue from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s heroes undercover by donning a cap and sunglasses for a more casual look. Krypto can also be seen in one of these drawings, meaning fans may see him in the series.
For the book, Superman will instead be seen in a more tactical outfit which is sleeveless with gloves, but the same logo as the other debated suits. The pencils for the series will be done by Janín, who will also bring life to other DC characters, such as Manchester Black and similar rogues.
In an exclusive interview, Eisner Award-winning writer Grant Morrison, who will pen the series, described what it was like to have the artist on the book. “He’s great and I’ve never worked with him before,” they said. “He’s just brilliant with the scale and scope and just focusing in on the emotions.”
In addition to Morrison’s writing and Janín on pencils, Jordie Bellaire will be the colorist for the book. The first issue will see variant covers from Jen Bartel and Bryan Hitch. Superman and the Authority #1 will release on July 20, 2021.
