Superman and Lobo just faced a nearly indestructible army of clones that is arguably more deadly than what the Jedi faced in Star Wars.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman Vs. Lobo #2, on sale now from DC Comics.
The first issue of Superman Vs. Lobo ended with a shocking twist. Not only were the long-dead home worlds of the two title characters restored, but their native sons also ended up on the wrong planets. Of course, this goes about as well as expected. While the Man of Steel deals with the loss of his powers under Czarnia’s red sun, the Main Man sets to work making his mark on Krypton. This results in a clone army far more formidable than the one seen in the Star Wars universe.
The Main Man makes some very powerful friends in Superman Vs. Lobo #2 (by Tim Seeley, Sarah Beattie, Mirka Andolfo, Arif Prianto and Fabio Amelia). After their cold and calculating ways led to their planet’s destruction the first time around, a number of Kryptonians choose to embrace their baser impulses this time around, giving them an ally in Lobo. The Main Man suggests a solution to their problems, telling them to steal resources from neighboring planets. The scientists Fel-Kar and Jan-S decide to take this a step further and create the worst clone army possible to ensure that their goals are met.
Without Lobo’s knowledge, Jan-S retrieved his genetic material so that Fel-Kar could create an indestructible clone army of the powerful alien in hopes of ensuring that they would have the manpower needed to enact their plan of planetary thievery with maximum destruction. In a cruel twist of fate, the clone army’s first target is Czarnia, where they intend to bring about a second genocide to the masses.
With Superman on Czarnia, he’s there to witness the clones’ chaos firsthand. Though most believe the clones to be pale copies of the original without minds of their own, the Man of Steel recognizes that they are very much alive, as they feel hate for him and Czarnia. They even crudely refer to Lobo as their father.
To the surprise of Fel-Kar, Lobo turns out to be against the whole thing. In his eyes, there is nobody better than the Main Man, and any attempt to make copies of him, however poor, is an insult. He kills the Kryptonian scientist for his actions and promises to kill Jan-S too.
Thanks to their regenerative abilities and super strength, this clone army is nearly unstoppable. While Superman couldn’t make any headway in his fight against them thanks to his missing powers, Lobo doesn’t have that problem. Nevertheless, even with all his strength and skill, he can’t make much of a dent in their forces. This is quite possibly the most powerful clone army around, and is definitely more powerful than the one seen in Star Wars.
Although the Clone Troopers from the Star Wars franchise are highly skilled and efficient, they’re still only human and fall just as easily as anyone else. Lobo’s clones don’t have that issue. What they lack in coordination, they make up for in their resilience and sheer ruthlessness.
In the end, the Lobo clones’ reign of terror is brought to an end surprisingly easy. Jan-S is revealed to have been Superman’s mother, Lara Lor-Van, the entire time. She sabotaged the clones from the beginning, making them susceptible to the poisonous rain of Czarnia. As soon as the rain hits the invading forces, they’re all destroyed. If it wasn’t for that forward-thinking however, Krypton’s rash and selfish plan could have spelled doomed for the entire universe. With the clones sharing Lobo’s formidable abilities, there’s very little that could have stood a chance of stopping them.
