Storm Shadow’s Recruitment by Cobra Doesn’t Make Sense

Tommy Arashikage is recruited by a sinister group in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, but given his principles, it doesn’t add up.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, in theaters now.

In Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, it’s not surprising that the core theme of the movie is family. It’s what unites Snake Eyes (Henry Golding) and Tommy (Andrew Koji) in the Arashikage Clan, and, like the source material, also what drives a wedge between them. Sadly, while the black-clad ninja begins his path to eventually becoming a hero, Tommy’s found by the Baroness and convinced, by becoming Storm Shadow, he’ll have a new family in Cobra. However, given Tommy’s compelling principles, the recruitment just doesn’t add up.

Now, Tommy isn’t greedy, bloodthirsty and doesn’t want to watch the world burn like other versions of the character. He’s hoping to lead the clan and become a force for world peace, which is why he thinks Snake Eyes can be useful. But sadly, Snake Eyes betrays the Arashikage because all he wanted was to steal their Sun Jewel and offer it up to Kenta and the Yakuza.

However, the problem with that part of the story is the person empowering Kenta’s crusade of revenge is Baroness herself. She puts everything into play because she wants the weapon from Kenta, offering resources that’ll give him vengeance for being banished. And on top of that, she’s helping Kentra drive the part of the deal where they’ll turn over Augustine, the man who killed Snake Eyes’ dad, in exchange for him infiltrating and backstabbing the Arashikage.

This leads to Kenta betraying Baroness and using the weapon himself to decimate the clan, which culminates in Tommy wielding the Sun Jewel. Of course, that action was forbidden, so when the war’s done, Tommy gets kicked out, and Baroness is there to pounce on the vulnerable soldier, making him her Storm Shadow. However, at this point in the story, Tommy shouldn’t want to become a weapon for the group that conspired to shatter his world.

Cobra helped take everything from him, with Baroness being as complicit as Snake Eyes and Kenta. Had they not aided their plan, Tommy’s family wouldn’t have been breached, and he wouldn’t have had to use the Sun Jewel. In truth, as much as Tommy should want Snake Eyes and the Yakuza dead, Baroness and Cobra should be just as high on the list.

Cobra sullied Tommy’s legacy, broke the Arashikage dynasty and took everything he worked so hard for. But despite all that, he still joins their cause because this new universe needs its Storm Shadow. No matter that he’s a man who values loyalty, honesty and honor, Tommy will fight against the side of good because that’s what the story dictates.

To see Tommy’s dark turn, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is now in theaters and will be available to stream on Paramount+ 45 days after its theatrical release.
