The first clip from Marvel’s What If…? animated series features Steve Rogers donning a suit of armor to become World War II’s version of Iron Man.
Fans familiar with the marketing for What If…? already know Peggy Carter replaces Steve Rogers as Captain Carter, but the first clip from the Disney+ animated series reveals the former Captain America as World War II’s version of Iron Man.
The clip begins with Captain Carter repelling a tank explosive with her shield, as it explodes in the air. She later slides into a trench with Bucky Barnes and Dum Dum Dugan and begins to radio for more air support. The person on the other end of the call signals that “Rogers is inbound,” much to the surprise of the trio. It’s here that we see Steve Rogers soar into the action in an Iron Man suit reminiscent of the one Tony Stark forged for himself in the first Iron Man film.
“Hey Peggy, now you owe me one,” Steve says right before being blasted in the chest by the enemy. He then retaliates by crushing the tank’s canon as Captain Carter leaps out of the trench to join the fray, leaving Dugan to ponder, “Hold on a second. She’s friends with that Hydra stomper?” to which Bucky replies, “I think I’m friends with him too.”
One of the What If…? episodes will be centered on a world where Peggy Carter takes the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. She goes on to fight as Captain Carter, leaving a scrawny Steve to turn to a suit of armor in order to fight in the war.
Captain Carter and What If…? make their debut on Disney+ Aug. 11.
