Stellaris: How to Get a Size 55 Planet

Of all the exploits that exist in Stellaris, getting a size 55 planet is both one of the most difficult and most powerful to attain.

A major goal of any Empire in Stellaris is to colonize habitable worlds that you’ve discovered. Determining the right planet to colonize is based on factors such as location, habitability, special features, resources and size. The size of a planet determines how many districts can be built and how large of a population your colony has. The largest possible size of any planet is 25 — but there is actually a way to get a planet with more than double the limit for districts.

Getting a planet of this size requires time, resources and luck. You’ll need two factor to start the process. First, you’ll need to have stumbled upon the Horizon Signal event chain. Every time one of your science ships travels through a blackhole system, there’s a very small chance that it will start Horizon Signal. The fastest and easiest way to start the event is by having several science ships travel through as many blackhole systems as possible. However, players should refrain from playing through the event chain until later.

The second factor is to have the Contingency activate as the Endgame Crisis, which can be done by selecting it as the Crisis Type in the game settings before starting the session. Once this is finally activated, four random star systems with uninhabitable worlds will be transformed into unique machine worlds called Sterilization Hubs. Players will find that these planets are capable of supporting 55 districts, though it can’t be taken with ground forces in transport ships. The only way to destroy a Hub is by orbital bombardment until it turns into a Broken World — but don’t worry, it won’t stay broken for long.

Once the Sterilization Hub is destroyed and the system is taken, players must then build a habitat megastructure around any celestial body in the system and colonize it after completion. Then, they must move the Empire’s capital to that system habitat. The decision itself costs 250 Influence, so make sure to save up.

Once this is done, players should finally progress through Horizon Signal until they can construct the Omega Alignment building on the habitat (which can only be built on your capital world). The building will allow players to research a special project that opens an entry point for the Worm, which will appear in the system and present a choice to either consent to its demands or fight it. Consenting will cause it to turn the system’s star into a blackhole, making every planetary body in the system into barely habitable Tomb Worlds, including the destroyed Sterilization Hub.

Even if your Empire’s species doesn’t have a Tomb World preference, the planet can still be terraformed into a more habitable world of your preference. Those who have the Arcology Project Ascension Perk, can create an Ecumenopolis after colonizing it. This makes for a ridiculously large colony world that can support at least 600 pops and generate ludicrous amounts of alloys, consumer goods and other resources.

This method is technically an exploit — and an obviously overpowered one at that. However, since this can typically only be acquired late in the game (if ever), Paradox Interactive has said it doesn’t intend on patching it out, meaning anyone both savvy and lucky enough to acquire a world of this size has earned it.
