In Static: Season One #3, Virgil finally designs his first superhero costume, which serves as an homage to his first costume from Milestone comics.

Most superheroes have a closet’s worth of alternate costumes they change into from time to time when they need a break from their basic outfits. However, most heroes can never escape the legacy of their classic looks, which is why Static: Season One decide to make Static’s newest costume an homage to his first costume in the original Milestone Universe.

Static: Season One #3 by Vita Ayala, Nikolas Draper-Ivey and Chriscross opens with Virgil surrounded by police ready to arrest him because they thought he was the armored hero Hardware. Thinking on his feet, he nabbed every single piece of technology that he could fit in his bag and disguised himself using a gas mask and a coverall. Virgil used a dummy to distract them as they started to close in, then jumped out of the warehouse. When the police shot at him, his electromagnetic powers worked on instinct and stopped the bullets in their tracks. Afterward, he pulled the guns away from the cops only for them to surround him again with their patrol cars. Luckily, Virgil channeled his powers on the manhole cover he was standing on and used it to fly away to safety.

At home, Virgil unloaded his newly acquired technology and started tinkering with it to create a new costume. The first thing he played with was a piece of kinetic metal, which could be hinting at him acquiring the DCAU’s Static Saucer in the future. As he started working on his new suit, he remembered how he used to dress up as superheroes inspired by ‘80s and ‘90s anime. As a kid, he wore a gold and blue costume reminiscent of his iconic DC Animated Universe look. His sister taught him how to sow and he used it to create costumes for his friend group so they could pretend to be superheroes.

Using those skills, he redesigned Hardware’s technology to make himself his new black and white suit. After finishing the suit, the rest of the issue details Virgil having a heart-to-heart with his father and making up with his friend Richie. Later at school, Hotstreak comes back with members of the mysterious organization that’s hunting Bang Babies and started gathering up Virgil’s friends, then started hunting Virgil.

Static Shock New Costume

Artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey confirmed the name of the costume as Virgil’s “Run It Back” suit, but also said that this is only one of many costumes to come. Virgil’s new costume was designed as an homage to his original costume in his debut “Burning Sensation” in 1993’s Static #1 by Dwayne McDuffie, Robert L. Washington III, John Paul Leon, and Steve Mitchell. Static would later don a yellow jacket that was completely yellow, unlike the more subtle yellow and black of the “Run It Back” suit. The yellow lenses over the mask are one of the more subtle features of the suit, which were inspired by the goggles from his DCAU costume.

Given that Static: Season One aims to retell Static’s story from the beginning with a more modern twist, it makes complete sense to return to his original costume for the time being then move through a variety of other costumes as the story progresses.
