Developer Bethesda welcomes fans into the Starfield, as the studio shows off more stunning concept art for its upcoming intergalactic RPG.
The curtain over Bethesda’s Starfield continues to be pulled back an inch at a time, as the developer recently revealed more stunning concept art from its upcoming sci-fi RPG.
In the newest episode of the game’s behind-the-scenes series, Into the Starfield, Bethesda provided fans with plenty of new conceptual images to speculate over. Among the new pieces of concept art shown, there’s the homey inside of a spaceship, a crystalline cave, portable dining kits, what appears to be an underground hideaway, planetary surfaces and more. While the featurette didn’t unveil any gameplay, fans can still expect regular updates, as Bethesda has promised to release more episodes of Into the Starfield over the coming months.
The seven-minute video also features appearances by game director Todd Howard, studio director Angela Browder and art director Matt Carofano. Comparing Starfield to the studio’s popular epic fantasy RPG, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Carofano said, “[Starfield] is a more grounded game and a grounded setting about exploration. I think that gives us a different take on how we make everything. So that’s the sort of thing you latch onto when we’re making new areas, making environments, making characters.” Moreover, Browder expressed the importance of using the development team’s existing “lifetime of knowledge” in areas like “robotics or engineering” to help make the game’s realistic atmosphere feel as believable as possible.
Howard, meanwhile, addressed the similarities between Starfield and Skyrim, saying that although “the mechanics of the world are entirely different,” Starfield will feature a first-person perspective, an interactive, story-dense world and not only one but two “‘step out’ moments.” “We always have that ‘step out’ moment into the world, so to say,” Howard said. “The technology has changed. We’ve all changed. So our expectations when loading up a game, like, ‘Okay, I’m going to step out and there’s going to be this moment.’ Us being able to do that and have it feel new every generation, every game, is something that is really special about what we do. I like to say that Starfield has two ‘step out’ moments. That’s cryptic.”
More Starfield concept art was shared earlier this month, as over a dozen visuals of vast deserts, alien jungles and cyberpunk-esque cities were revealed to the accompanying orchestral tune of “Starfield Suite.” The “Settled Systems” trailer back in October provided an overview of the game’s various factions alongside a handful of story details. In fact, Starfield was revealed to have the longest script of any Bethesda game to date, with its over 150,000 lines of recorded dialogue far surpassing the scripts for both Fallout 4 and Skyrim.
Developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, Starfield will launch on Nov. 11, 2022 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. The game will be available to download for free on Xbox Game Pass on the same day.
