Todd Howard, the executive producer behind Bethesda’s upcoming RPG Starfield, confirms players will be able to choose their preferred pronouns.

Starfield‘s executive producer Todd Howard confirms that players will be able to select their preferred pronouns for their in-game characters.

During a Reddit AMA, Howard responded to a question regarding the role-playing mechanics within Starfield. When questioned on how the game will handle character creation, Howard responded by writing, “Really excited about what the team has done with character creation here. Including choosing background, skills, etc. You also can pick your pronoun (he, she, they) and we’ve recorded all the relevant dialogue to support that choice.” The pronoun selection option will likely function as a separate choice to the character’s sex. Fans responded positively to Howard’s confirmation, with many praising  Starfield‘s inclusivity. The sci-fi RPG will be the first Bethesda Softworks game to allow players to select their preferred pronouns.

While the ability to select pronouns is a new feature for Bethesda, the ability to hear selected names represented with actual in-game dialogue was first implemented in Fallout 4, which was released in 2015. The system made a return in Fallout 76, the online MMO set within the retro post-apocalyptic world.

As for Starfield, the intergalactic role-playing game is Bethesda’s first new intellectual property in over 25 years. Announced in 2018, the game will launch players into the Milky Way, tasking them with discovering the universe’s secrets for the exploratory organization Constellation. Little is currently known about the narrative of Starfield, but Howard confirmed that it will be the biggest game the studio has ever created. The script reportedly contains 150,000 lines of dialogue, a significant increase from Fallout 4, which featured 111,000 lines.

In terms of its tone, Starfield will be a more serious game in general, focusing on capturing a more scientifically accurate future. Bethesda worked with NASA to ensure accuracy when designing the game’s items and vehicles. “This isn’t Star Wars, or Star Trek, it’s kind of its own thing – and I think as we show more, hopefully, it’ll carve out its own niche. It’s still a game but it does like to give you this sense of, ‘I buy the reality of it’, right?” said Howard, in a previous interview.

Starfield currently doesn’t have a specific release date but is scheduled to launch in late 2022. It will be an Xbox Series X|S exclusive and will also be available on launch through Xbox Game Pass.
