War of the Bounty Hunters saw Boba Fett use a disguise to gain access to Crimson Dawn’s auction, but he was quickly recognized by a defining trait.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #2 by Charles Soule, Luke Ross, Neeraj Menon and VC’s Travis Lanham, on sale now.
Boba Fett’s armor is one of the most iconic uniforms in the Star Wars universe, with the bounty hunter having made a name for himself as an extremely dangerous figure. Although Fett usually prefers a run and gun approach, there are rare opportunities where he elects to rely more on stealth than brute force. However, War of the Bounty Hunters #2 offered a glimpse at one of these moments and showed why disguises are not Fett’s forte, thanks to his voice.
While at Jabba the Hutt’s palace, Fett learned that Crimson Dawn had stolen Han Solo’s carbonite slab from him. Bib Fortuna further explained that the criminal organization was planning to auction Solo off to the greatest powers in the galaxy. Fett knew that he had to gain access to this exclusive event in order to reclaim his stolen bounty and headed to the planet Jekara to obtain answers.
Upon his arrival on Jekara, Fett noticed how heavily guarded Crimson Dawn kept their base. He assumed that Crimson Dawn was anticipating his arrival considering that they had stolen their goods from him in the first place. He also had to worry about the other parties that were present, including the Hutts, who had recently put out a bounty on Fett, as well as the Empire who were not pleased that the bounty hunter had lost an important Rebel operative. Realizing the difficulty of his operation, Fett accosted an incoming attendee and demanded his invitation as well as his cloak.
The new disguise made accessing the event easy for the bounty hunter. He knew that he would not be able to reclaim Solo on his own and found Doctor Aphra among the attendees. Fett immediately sought her out, but she saw right through his disguise, recognizing his voice as that of a clone trooper. However, Aphra was not able to discern his identity because she was unaware that Fett was a clone. Since Fett knew other players at the event were aware of his heritage, he elected to return to his infamous Mandalorian armor before making his move. Unfortunately, he ran afoul of the Rebels who were also in the middle of attempting to steal Solo. Even worse, Darth Vader showed up at the auction making Fett’s mission that much more difficult.
It’s ironic that Boba Fett’s voice could give away his disguise when he was rarely seen talking during the Skywalker Saga. The only thing more menacing than Fett’s appearance was his silence. When Fett does talk, his helmet muffles his voice, which should make it very difficult to realize that he is a clone. It’s also unclear how many people are aware of his true origin. Since he is rarely seen without his helmet, there is a chance that only Bossk, Vader, and the Emperor are aware of Fett’s true identity.
Star Wars has shown time and time again that the best replacement for a strong plan is the adoption of a disguise. Luke Skywalker and Han Solo wore stormtrooper armor while infiltrating the Death Star and rescuing Princess Leia in A New Hope. Din Djarin would do something similar when he wore trooper armor during The Mandalorian episode “The Believer.” Now, Boba Fett has followed suit by stealing a criminal’s cloak in order to hide from the masses during Crimson Dawn’s auction.
As War of the Bounty Hunters continues to heat up, not only has Darth Vader now appeared at the auction, but Boba Fett is on the auction floor in full gear. The stage is set for an ultimate confrontation between the greatest forces in the galaxy. Fett will have to stay sharp if he plans to reclaim Solo while the Rebellion, Empire, and the Hutts are looking to do the same.
