Star Wars’ New ‘Leak’ Would Change the Knights of Ren Entirely

[ad_1]

So far, Star Wars has wasted the the Knights of Ren’s potential by portraying them as clumsy and untrained, but that might be changing soon.

For all of their flaws, the Star Wars sequels did have plenty of storytelling potential. The problem was that the trilogy wasted a lot of that potential. Individual characters like Rose and Finn and General Hux fell by the wayside much too often, and cool new ideas (Anakin as a split-personality Force ghost or Rey as a Grey Jedi) were often cast aside. One of the sequels’ biggest deficiencies was the entire concept and portrayal of the Knights of Ren, although a recent “leak” could be a sign that Disney wants to rectify its mistakes with the Dark Side cult.

The supposed “leak,” which first appeared on YouTube and Twitter, showed a trailer for a project called “The Knights of Ren: A Star Wars Story.” It could be fan made, but if so, it’s pretty impressive. The trailer featured a Nazgul-esque Knight of Ren — complete with dark robes and a crown — riding atop a TIE fighter and cutting down an X-wing. Again, it could be fan-made, but if not, the depiction would be a complete departure from previous portrayals of the Knights of Ren.

Knights of Ren Leak

The Knights of Ren made their first appearance in The Force Awakens with a name drop and later as part of Rey’s Force vision. The Last Jedi completely ignored their existence, while The Rise of Skywalker showed Ben Solo effortlessly cutting them down in their only scene. In a packed trilogy, it makes sense why the group would fall to the background, but it was clear that fans wanted more. So, Disney obliged.

The Rise of Kylo Ren comic series was the Knights of Ren’s first substantive appearance. During the four-issue run, Ben Solo went from tempted Jedi to murderous leader and got an extended look at the Knights of Ren. The thing is, they weren’t very impressive even then. Although, they could all “touch the shadow,” none of them displayed enough power to formidable foes. When the group confronted Luke Skywalker, the fight was seven to one, but Luke never hesitated. He defeated all seven, destroyed their weapons and managed to not harm any of them in the process.

Their leader — a man by the name of Ren — was the only one with a lightsaber, and he openly declined to engage Luke in a duel. He was also the only one that displayed any real Force sensitivity during the series. However, his limited abilities were no help when Ben Solo attacked him. Untrained and never having been in a real fight, Ben Solo killed Ren with ease and took his mantle as leader of the cult.

Luke Skywalker verses the Knights of Ren

Getting back to the trailer, while impressive, it is completely at odds with everything that Disney has ever shown with the Knights of Ren. When compared to the rest of Star Wars canon, the trailer, — with all of its Nazgul-like, lightsaber-wielding badassery — looks like a fan’s hopeful “what if?” scenario.

Of course, that’s not ruling out the possibility of the trailer being real. Maybe it’s a new member that Luke hunts down post Return of the Jedi. Or, perhaps, it’s a masked Snoke in his younger years, making the Knights of Ren his Force-wielding thralls. After all, they did report to Snoke in the sequels. Either way, fans will certainly keep their eyes open for any more possible hints about a  Knights of Ren project for Disney+.
