New variant covers for Marvel’s Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters confirm the new name of Boba Fett’s ship, formerly known as Slave I.
Star Wars recently made headlines for labeling Boba Fett’s Slave I as “Boba Fett’s Starship” on merchandise such as LEGO sets. Now, it appears a new name has finally landed.
As confirmed by Marvel Comics in the form of some War of the Bounty Hunters variant covers from Paolo VIllanelli, Slave I is now called Firespray. While the new name might seem obscure on paper, this is a reference to the fact that Slave I is a Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft, much like how the Millennium Falcon is a Corellian YT-1300f light freighter.
The full list of blueprint variant covers is below:
Bossk and The Hound’s Tooth
Boba Fett and Firespray
IG-88 and IG-2000
Zuckuss and The Mist Hunter
Valance Beilert and The Broken Wing
Dengar and The Punishing One
In June, a LEGO Star Wars set featuring Boba Fett’s ship was unveiled, but rather than Slave I, the package simply referred to the vessel as “Boba Fett’s Starship.” This drew ire from a number of Star Wars fans, including Mark Anthony Austin, who played Boba Fett in the special edition of A New Hope. It even spawned a fan petition pressuring Disney to leave the ship’s name alone.
When discussing the change, LEGO’s Michael Lee Stockwell said, “We’re not calling it Slave I any more. This is Boba Fett’s Starship.” “It’s probably not something which has been announced publicly but it is just something that Disney doesn’t want to use any more,” Jens Kronvold Frederiksen added.
