Lucasfilm and Disney brought in die-hard Star Wars fans to serve as extras for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show.
Disney and Lucasfilm no doubt made some Star Wars fans’ dreams come true by letting them serve as extras on the set of the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
“The extras were incredible on the set, and a lot of them were mega Star Wars fans,” series star Maya Erskine told Variety. “One guy, he was so nice and he lifted up his sleeves and had Star Wars tattoos over his whole body. And they build droids. There are lot of Star Wars fans that build droids, and then the production companies will rent [them] from the fans.”
Erskine referred to her role on the Disney+ series as a “speck” and said she filmed her role shortly after giving birth to her son. “I got to bring my baby to set,” she said. “I wanted to wrap him in a shawl and have him pass as an extra in Star Wars.” She also complimented series director Deborah Chow and the rest of the cast, saying the entire experience was “so fun to do.”
This is not the first time a Disney+ Star Wars TV series brought in fans to serve as extras. Running low on Stormtrooper costumes, The Mandalorian enlisted the help of the 501st Legion, an “all-volunteer organization formed for the express purpose of bringing together costume enthusiasts” and “promote interest in Star Wars through the building and wearing of quality costumes,” according to the group’s website. The 501st members are known and respected for their detail-oriented costumes and giving spirit, and have made many appearances at promotional and charity events, usually at the request of Lucasfilm itself.
Erskine’s role remains under wraps, as do those of Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie. However, it is rumored that Kang will be portraying Fifth Brother, a recurring villain from Star Wars Rebels and a member of the Jedi-hunting Inquisition.
One role that has been confirmed is Hayden Christensen’s return as Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader, who will have a long-awaited rematch with the titular Jedi Master.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ in 2022.
