A new version of Anakin Skywalker is introduced in Star Wars Adventures: Ghosts of Vader’s Castle, and this one is more frightening than Darth Vader.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers from Star Wars Adventures: Ghost of Vader’s Castle #4, on sale now from IDW Publishing.
There are quite a few frightening figures in the Star Wars universe, but few compare to the power and presence of the Jedi’s deadliest enemy, the Sith. Because of his strength with the Force and his intimidating suit, Darth Vader is not only one of the most powerful and well-known of the Sith Lords, but also the most frightening. However, in Star Wars Adventures: Ghost of Vader’s Castle #4 (by Cavan Scott, Chris Fenoglio, Francesco Francavilla, Derek Charm, Charlie Kirchoff and Shawn Lee) Lena Graff encounters an evil version of Anakin that’s arguably scarier than Darth Vader.
In the first issue of the Ghost of Vader’s Castle miniseries, Milo Graff, Lena’s brother, was captured by their possessed droid Crater and taken to Mustafar. Over the following two issues, Lena senses that something is wrong because of the evil nightmares that she’s having and has recruited her crew to go to rescue Milo. “Beware the Chosen One,” opens with Lena, Jaxxon, Hudd and Skritt inbound to Mustafar.
As the issue opens, Lena and her crew are being pursued by TIE fighters when an argument breaks out about the quality of Jaxxon’s ship. She tries to take control of the situation, but in an instant her crew and the TIE fighters are gone. The cockpit is dark, but she hears a voice from the chair in front of her. When the chair turns, Lena sees a child Anakin who tells her that he is her “worst nightmare.”
Lena tries to run, but somehow turns into a child version of herself. As the miniature Anakin walks after her in terrifying pursuit, he talks about how lost and alone Lena is and how she cannot save her brother. She hides and finds a broken Crater, but then, Anakin – this time as an evil Jedi version of himself – finds her, and he’s wielding a fiery lightsaber. He’s clearly an apparition, but he is still able to use his saber to slice of the droid’s head, and Lena wisely chooses to run instead of engaging the ghostly figure.
As Lena runs, the specter calls out that Milo’s gone, along with her friends and parents. She tries to convince herself that none of this is real and that her brother is fine, before she collides with a kid version of Milo. However, this version of her brother begins contorting his body and telling Lena to save herself. He then transforms to Vader and force chokes his sister until she wakes up from her nightmare.
When she awakens, Lena goes up to the cockpit, and experiences another dream where the real Vader kills her crew in the cockpit. Eventually, she fully wakes up, and Jaxxon lands their ship on Mustafar’s surface, where Lena and her crew will final come face to face with Vader’s castle.
