IDW Publishing’s Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #9 is bringing a major sequel trilogy character into the High Republic era.
Written by Daniel José Older and illustrated by Toni Bruno, the issue sees the Jedi Padawan on Takodana, where they encounter none other than Maz Kanata. Her appearance was previously teased in Issue #8.
Portrayed by Lupita Nyong’o, Maz Kanata debuted in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens when Han Solo and Chewbacca brought Finn and Rey to Takodana to regroup before resuming their mission to get BB-8 to the Resistance. While at Maz’s castle, Rey discovered the lightsaber that once belonged to Anakin and Luke Skywalker. While it’s still unclear how she came into possession of the weapon, Marvel’s main Star Wars title has alluded to this mystery on several occasions since its most recent relaunch.
Maz returned in The Last Jedi, albeit as a hologram, to inform the Resistance about the master codebreaker on Canto Bight. Of course, Finn and Rose would never actually get in touch with Maz’s contact and were instead aided by DJ. In The Rise of Skywalker, Maz was a key member of the Resistance herself and gifted Chewbacca with Han Solo’s medal from A New Hope.
Much like the Jedi Master Yoda, Maz’s species is unknown, and while she’s not a Jedi herself, she does have a connection to the Force. This is most evident when Maz senses that the Skywalker lightsaber was calling out to Rey.
