In War of the Bounty Hunters #4, Bokku the Hutt boldly oversteps his boundaries by planning to overthrow Jabba and challenging the Empire.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers from Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #4, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Jabba the Hutt is the most well-known Hutt in the Star Wars universe, but he isn’t the only one. The Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters series (by Charles Soule, Luke Ross, David Messina, Neeraj Menon, Guru-eFX, and VC’s Travis Lanham) has introduced a new Hutt, Bokku, whose aspirations might spell his own doom.
The War of the Bounty Hunters series – and multiple other crossover comics – has been telling the story of how Han Solo’s carbonite-frozen body made its way from Bespin to Jabba’s Palace on Tatooine. It has been quite the journey, and most recently, Jabba the Hutt purchased Solo during Crimson Dawn’s auction. Then, Darth Vader came in and claimed Solo as his own. In a smart move, Jabba bows to Vader’s demands, but Bokku isn’t happy.
While Vader’s minions are taking Solo away, Bokku tries to convince Jabba to make a move. Jabba, though, is more concerned with his well-being than appearances, stating that “The relationship of the Hutts to the Empire matters more than any one prize. Even Han Solo.”
Bokku is appalled. One of the Hutts tries to convince him that Han’s body was Jabba’s property, so letting Vader have him was Jabba’s decision. However, Bokku is more worried about looking like fools in front of the other crime syndicates. In a grandiose speech, he tells the others on the Hutt Council, “When [Jabba’s] choices hurt the clans, hurt the reputation of the Hutts, they will affect our ability to do business, to project strength in negotiations.” He concludes by asserting that they represent their people’s honor and power.
With Jabba gone, the other members of the Hutt Council agree with Bokku. With their backing, the aspiring Hutt plans to make his move that, if successful, will place him on top of the Hutt pecking order while simultaneously vaulting him to the top of Vader’s most wanted list.
Vader did instruct Bokku to oppose Jabba and bid against him, but it’s obvious that the Hutt is getting to big for his slithering well-being. Opposing the Empire’s claim on Solo was not included in his instructions, and making an enemy of Vader is a notoriously bad idea. Perhaps his actions here are the reason that Jabba, and not Bokku, is still the premier Hutt in Return of the Jedi.
