He was the “wise old man” character in A New Hope, and he was a major character in the prequel movie trilogy as well. Obi-Wan is a powerful Jedi, but he doesn’t always need his lightsaber to save the day.
In fact, it could be said that most of Obi-Wan’s most notable achievements and fan-favorite moments came from when he kept his lightsaber on his belt and used his other talents to get the job done. Jedi Knights aren’t just warriors; they are diplomats, monks, peacekeepers, and spies, and Obi-Wan boasts a diverse set of skills for keeping the galaxy safe. What can he do without his lightsaber?
10 Obi-Wan Can Use Jedi Mind Tricks
“These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.” This is a classic line for a reason. Obi-Wan said this in conjunction with a Jedi mind trick when speaking to an Imperial stormtrooper who had pulled over Luke Skywalker’s speeder in Mos Eisley, and the Force was on Obi-Wan’s side.
No violence is necessary to use Jedi mind tricks. Aside from characters who are immune, such as Watto the junk dealer, any ordinary person can be gently manipulated with the trickery of the Force, and Obi-Wan can do this with ease.
9 Obi-Wan Can Monitor Luke Skywalker’s Growth From Afar
Obi-Wan spent 19 years in seclusion on the desert world of Tatooine, not just to keep himself hidden from an Empire that wanted him dead. Obi-Wan was also watching over the young Luke Skywalker from afar, regardless of what Beru and Lars thought of it.
Obi-Wan rarely intervened directly in Luke’s life, but he did make it his responsibility to ensure Luke’s survival and determine when Luke is ready for proper Jedi training. He certainly doesn’t need his lightsaber for this unless powerful enemies attack, and that is very rare.
8 Obi-Wan Can Scare Off Tusken Raiders
The humanoid Tusken Raiders are a fairly common sight on the sands of Tatooine, though most people would rather not encounter them directly. At one point, Luke brought along the droid C-3PO to find the wayward R2-D2, and ran afoul of a squad of Tusken Raiders. It was time for Obi-Wan to intervene.
Anakin Skywalker once slaughtered Tusken Raiders with his lightsaber, but Obi-Wan felt no need to shed blood like that. Instead, he somehow mimicked the cry of the dreaded krayt dragon, and the Tusken Raiders fled.
7 Obi-Wan Can Sense People From Afar
Obi-Wan can sense other people through the Force, and if people are suffering greatly or in pain, he will know it. During the events of A New Hope, Obi-Wan was preparing to visit the world of Alderaan with Luke, but the Death Star had already destroyed it. Han Solo ended up flying Obi-Wan into the asteroid field that remained.
Obi-Wan felt everyone on Alderaan panicking right before dying, describing millions of souls crying out in terror before being snuffed out. That sensation was a heavy burden on Obi-Wan’s mind, and any other Jedi would have felt the same way.
6 Obi-Wan Can Covertly Sabotage The Enemy
Obi-Wan is a brave warrior, but he is also crafty, and he is humble enough to play a supporting role in someone else’s quest. When the Millennium Falcon got itself trapped by the Death Star’s tractor beams, Obi-Wan knew that some sabotage was necessary for it and its crew to escape.
Obi-Wan had Han and Luke stay behind while he snuck further into the Death Star, and he found and disabled the tractor beams without any stormtroopers or officers seeing him. As planned, the Falcon made a clean getaway when it was time to leave.
5 Obi-Wan Can Bargain & Haggle Fairly
Obi-Wan can use Jedi mind tricks to influence lesser minds if necessary, but that doesn’t work on everyone, nor does it have to. Obi-Wan played fair when he bargained with the smuggler Han Solo to buy passage aboard the Millennium Falcon, no Force tricks necessary.
Obi-Wan didn’t have much cash, and neither did Luke. But Obi-Wan was slick enough to offer a massive cash bonus once the gang arrived at Alderaan (somehow). It was a bit underhanded, but Obi-Wan was sure that he could handle things once the crew arrived at Alderaan. It was a moot point, though.
4 Obi-Wan Can Support The Jedi Council As A Member
The Jedi Council is made up of the wisest and most experienced Jedi Knights, from the highly influential Mace Windu to Plo Koon and the great Master Yoda himself. During the events of The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan was too young to join, but that changed within a decade or two.
Obi-Wan joined the Council late in the Clone Wars, meaning he was viewed as an equal to Mace, Yoda, and the others, which says a lot. He was in a position to help shape galactic politics and determine the Republic’s next move in the Clone Wars.
3 Obi-Wan Can Counsel Other People As A Force Ghost
Obi-Wan gave his life aboard the Death Star to spare Luke the wrath of the fearsome Darth Vader, but he wasn’t gone for good. During the events of Return of the Jedi, Luke witnessed Yoda’s death before meeting Obi-Wan in ghost form. One Jedi master died, only for another to return, so to speak.
Not many Jedi return as Force ghosts like this, but Luke urgently needed more counseling, and Obi-Wan provided it from beyond the grave. Armed with all this knowledge, Luke was ready to face Darth Vader once again, and it’s all thanks to Obi-Wan.
2 Manipulate Objects With The Force
Nearly all Jedi Knights and Sith Lords alike can use the Force to move objects with telekinesis since this is not inherently a Light or Dark power. Some Jedi can lift greater weights than others, but the basic idea is the same, and Obi-Wan shares this talent.
Rarely was Obi-Wan seen lifting or moving objects with the Force like this in the movies, but he can certainly do it, and ideally, he will use this talent to deflect an enemy attack or save innocent lives that are in immediate danger.
1 Obi-Wan Can Teach Luke The Ways Of The Jedi
Obi-Wan gave Luke some basic Jedi training in A New Hope and taught Luke how to trust the Force over his own eyes to detect and neutralize all threats. By now, it was Luke’s turn to use a lightsaber instead of Obi-Wan, though Han scoffed at the sight. He greatly preferred blaster pistols and other firearms.
Two generations later, during the sequel movie era, an elderly Luke Skywalker repeated what Obi-Wan had done for him, and taught the Force-sensitive Rey how to use the Force both with and without a lightsaber. Obi-Wan would have been immensely proud.
