Spiral: 10 Threads Left Hanging For A Sequel

[ad_1]

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The long-running Saw franchise made an unexpected comeback in this year’s Spiral: From The Book Of Saw (or simply Spiral), which continues the Jigsaw Killer’s legacy even if he’s been dead since Saw III. Just like its predecessors, Spiral ended on a cliffhanger that promised more bloodshed to come.

Spiral followed Det. Zeke Banks’s investigation of the newest Jigsaw copycat, who turned out to be his partner Det. William Schenk. Their rivalry only became fully realized in the movie’s final act, and there are many ways in which it can continue even if one of them dies.

10 William Schenk Got Away

The most obvious sequel hook is that William got away scot free. After masterminding the grisly deaths of five cops (and one homeless man whose corpse he used to fake his death), William successfully got away and left Zeke to watch his father get brutally gunned down by the police.

The easiest path for a hypothetical Spiral 2 to follow is to show what William does next after escaping, and it could even start mere seconds or minutes after the first movie’s end. William’s personal mission may be over, but his reign as the next Jigsaw has only just begun.

9 William Schenk Could Start A New Game

The New Jigsaw Puppet

As a sequel, Spiral 2 doesn’t have to be a direct follow up to its predecessor. For reference, almost every Saw sequel can work as a standalone movie despite them being episodic chapters in a sprawling serial killer case. The same can happen in Spiral, especially since it’s more of Saw’s spiritual successor than a direct sequel.

After avenging his father, faking his death, and escaping, William is free to start an entirely new game the same way Jigsaw did in Saw II. In fact, his new victims don’t even have to be connected to anyone in Spiral. While it would be nice to see what happened to Spiral’s survivors, it’s not exactly a priority.

8 Zeke Banks Still Has To Avenge His Father & Himself

Zeke Attends To His Father

Another obvious sequel hook is Zeke’s revenge, since William killed his father. Spiral didn’t just end with the death of retired police chief Marcus Banks, but with Zeke’s complete and humiliating defeat to William. Zeke’s new partner had him outsmarted before they even met, and Zeke will most likely want some payback.

Zeke could either stay with the police force and lead a Jigsaw Task Force, or he could quit and embark on his own vigilante warpath. The former will evoke Det. Eric Matthews’ doomed assignment in Saw II, while the latter follows Det. David Tapp’s footsteps from the original movie. Either way, Zeke has some scores to settle.

7 William Schenk’s Victims Could Be Avenged By Their Friends & Loved Ones

Det. Fitch Failed His Test

Something the Saw movies have yet to properly delve into is the impact of the Jigsaw Murders on everyday people, whether they were his victims or their loved ones. Glimpses of this were seen in Saw: The Final Chapter, which showed a survivors’ group comprised of past victims who didn’t become apprentices the way Amanda did.

A second Spiral could follow the families and friends of William’s victims, and show them either trying to move on or avenge the dead, similar to what happened in Taken 2. A combination of this happened in Saw IV, where Officer Daniel Rigg got dragged into a Jigsaw game after seeing his friends and colleagues die horribly to Jigsaw’s traps from the sidelines.

6 William Schenk Still Has To Answer For His Crimes

The Police Apprehend Jigsaw

After killing five officers and publicly declaring war on the policing system, William essentially made himself Public Enemy Number One. Assuming Zeke successfully proves that Williams was behind everything in Spiral, a sequel could follow William facing the full arm of the law. That doesn’t mean he’ll go down without a fight, though.

For comparison, this is what happened in Saw II and Saw V to Saw: The Final Chapter. The second Saw had Jigsaw starting a deadly mind game with the cops who arrested him, while Saw V was the start of Det. Mark Hoffman’s game of cat-and-mouse with the investigators closing in on him. William could follow these examples and have a rematch with Zeke even when in custody.

5 The Police Are Still Inherently Corrupt

The Cops Disrespect Zeke

Like Logan did in Jigsaw, William resurrected Jigsaw’s modus operandi not for a twisted moral crusade, but for revenge. William targeted the five cops who were guiltiest in the assassination of his father, who was supposed to be a witness in a high-profile investigation. However, William won’t be stopping after his personal vendetta is satisfied.

In Spiral’s last act, William offered Zeke the chance to join him in purging law enforcement of corruption by targeting crooked cops with Jigsaw’s traps. A sequel could follow up on William’s expansion, since those he killed were only symptoms of a larger problem that’s still plaguing both the movie’s setting and reality as well.

4 Zeke Banks Could Reconsider William’s Offer

After hearing William out, Zeke tried to bring down the new Jigsaw rather than join him. Spiral ends with Zeke reaping the rewards of his choice, namely seeing his father get set up as a target for the SWAT and William escaping. Rather than inspire the need for revenge, these could instead disillusion Zeke.

Zeke gave up almost everything for a system that clearly doesn’t care for him or his good intentions, and it’s unlikely to improve its decorum with or without his presence. What’s worse is that the police force still hates Zeke, giving him fewer reasons to stick around. After everything, Zeke may see William’s extremism as the right call.

3 William Schenk May Have His Own Apprentices Or Copycats

Jigsaw Mentors Amanda

William is the first Saw antagonist to have no connection to either Jigsaw or his apprentices. Instead, he just examined the past Jigsaw cases and appropriated John Kramer’s ideology and methods for his own purposes. As the new Jigsaw, the next logical step for William is to gain some apprentices.

Aside from apprentices being a franchise staple, it’s impossible for William to be the only person in Spiral to have lost someone to the cops. His actions could’ve inspired others to follow his example, either by creating their own traps or joining his cause. If anything, William could return in a sequel with some new friends.

2 Zeke Banks Could Pave His Own Path As The Next Jigsaw

Zeke Examines The Spiral

An extension of the previous point is that Zeke could, instead, surpass William’s offer and become his own Jigsaw. Not only does Zeke have a cause for revenge like William did, but his personal moral code could’ve been warped by his string of tragedies – just like what happened to Jigsaw’s apprentices and Jigsaw himself.

Zeke being twisted into a self-righteous killer would be consistent with the franchise’s themes, and it would also uphold the tradition of the apprentices’ battle for Jigsaw’s mantle. This could also give fans the villain origin story they always wanted for Dr. Gordon from the first movie which, unfortunately, was only mentioned off-handedly in Saw: The Final Chapter.

1 Jigsaw’s Legacy Will Never Die

John Kramer Is Jigsaw

Spiral takes place roughly a decade after the last reported Jigsaw murder, but everyone still lives under the shadow of John Kramer’s sadistic legacy. William is living proof that the fear and awe Jigsaw instills will never die since he does exactly that, despite not being affiliated with the original Jigsaw murder spree.

Jigsaw and his collaborators may be long dead, but there will always be copycat killers or devotees to their cause. William may be the first and highest profile Jigsaw clone to come out in a while, but he won’t be the last. If anything, his multi-part revenge could inspire other Jigsaw fanatics to emerge and ramp up the stakes in the next movies.
