Marvel debuts a new spider-themed hero in Spider-Woman #15, as a member of Jessica Drew’s supporting cast gains a costume and a role as sidekick.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Woman #15, available now from Marvel.
For as long as she has been part of the Marvel Universe, Jessica Drew’s life has been little more than a series of superhero adventures entwined with shadowy espionage, often with her own family at the center of it all. Most recently she has been subjected to one of the most revelatory times of her life. Unfortunately, most of it has been for the worse, and Jessica has been left fighting both for and against her own family.
In recent months Jessica has helped her brother Michael Marchand to procure a treatment that could cure the illness that has affected her bloodline. This same disease posed a grave threat to Jessica’s son Gerry just as much as it did her niece Rebecca. Things couldn’t be that simple, however, and in the course of the debacle Michael has made multiple attacks on Jessica’s life, not to mention her home and family.
After watching Michael use the formula on himself that could have cured his daughter, Jessica fled with her niece. Once the two have made their way to safety, Rebecca explains the story of her parents’ lives together. After falling in love in college and getting pregnant, they discovered that Michael’s altered DNA was killing Rebecca’s mother Alison while she was pregnant. This drove Michael to his breaking point and is the reason for his recent, villainous actions. Seeing all of this unfold around her has left Rebecca with a burning desire to set things right, and she isn’t going to let anyone stop her from doing so. As seen in Spider-Woman #15 (by Karla Pacheco, Pere Perez, Frank D’Armata, and VC’s Clayton Cowles), she has already made preparations to leap into action herself.
Rebecca knows that her father wants to save people, but she also doesn’t think he is capable of doing so. To make up for his shortcomings, she has salvaged the work of both her grandmother and father and made a few adjustments, creating a costumed identity for herself. Jessica can hardly believe what she is seeing, but her sister Lindsay is awestruck in an entirely different way.
Where Jessica is resistant to Rebecca’s endeavors, Lindsay points out how much the budding young scientist has accomplished on her own, as well as the fact that Jessica was making much the same kind of dangerous decisions at almost he exact same age. With that, Jessica relents to taking on a sidekick, so long as she doesn’t come with a snarky nickname. Rebecca might claim she doesn’t need one, but there is no doubt that it is coming soon enough, especially if she continues to wear her brand new costume.
Whatever Rebecca may or may not be capable of in terms of powers and abilities is still to be seen, but she has already demonstrated a formidable intellect as well as incredible bravery. All of the work she has done and tech she has developed is sure to level any playing field she finds herself in, and her innate resilience will certainly be a huge boon for her super heroic efforts.
Jessica might not be the most supportive teammate, but even she has to be anxious to see what comes next for her new sidekick, as well as what name she eventually decides to take for herself.
