Norman Osborn’s death has dire consequences for Spider-Verse’s Spider-Punk in his first mini-series, from writer Cody Ziglar and artist Justin Mason.
Spider-Punk, Spider-Verse‘s hardcore hero, is swinging into his first solo series.
In April, Marvel Comics will launch Spider-Punk, a five-issue miniseries by writer Cody Ziglar and artist Justin Mason that focuses on Hobie Brown, the Spider-Man of Earth-138. After the death of the Norman Osborn of Earth-138, who led a corrupt fascist regime in the United States, Spider-Punk is on the run from the law. Still, the lingering effects of Osborn’s actions continue to influence the United States, forcing Hobie and his crew of fellow punkers to take action in a storyline dubbed “Banned in DC.”

Artist Olivier Coipel originally created Hobie’s attire for the role of Spider-UK, a character set to appear in the then-upcoming storyline “Spider-Verse.” However, writer Dan Slott, who helmed “Spider-Verse,” felt that the look was a poor fit for Spider-UK, who he had imagined as a Captain Britain lookalike. Still, the pair agreed that the outfit was worthwhile and gave Spider-Punk a supporting role in the storyline. Spider-Punk’s design stood out from the crowd and became popular with fans, earning Hobie a solo spotlight in Spider-Verse #2. This issue established Hobie’s rivalry with Osborn and his alliance with the Spider Army, a group of rebellious young people from Earth-138 that take on names like “Captain Anarchy.”
Though Spider-Punk’s rise has been a slow burn, his Spider-Verse co-star, Spider-Gwen, became one of Marvel’s most popular young heroes. Spider-Gwen, a variant of Gwen Stacy who became a spider-hero after the death of her world’s Peter Parker, will be the centerpiece of February’s Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse. Written by Tim Seeley and drawn by Jodi Nishijima, the story follows Gwen as she encounters variants of herself who take on the mantles of Wolverine, Captain America, Thor and Captain Marvel in their respective realities.
While Spidey’s spin-offs become the focal points of their own stories, Peter Parker will be returning to the role he created in April’s new Amazing Spider-Man series. The book will be written by Zeb Wells and drawn by John Romita Jr. and coincides with the 60th anniversary of Spider-Man’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15. Unfortunately, Amazing Spider-Man‘s premise suggests that Peter will be celebrating the occasion alone after making a catastrophic mistake that costs him the trust of the Avengers, Fantastic Four and even Aunt May. Art from the series’ debut issue shows Peter sitting in a smoky crater and bears the caption “What did Peter do?” Furthermore, Marvel’s promotion for Amazing Spider-Man advertises both Doctor Octopus and Tombstone being involved in the series, as they each make moves to establish themselves as major players to the world at large.
