In Amazing Spider-Man #88.BEY, Ben Reilly’s dangerous benefactors may have just purchased the beginnings of their very own superpowered army.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #88.BEY, available now from Marvel Comics.
Ever since taking up the mantle of Spider-Man, Ben Reilly has been at odds with his ominous benefactors at Beyond Corporation. Ben isn’t the only one noticing dangerous vibes from his employers as the original Prowler, Hobie Brown, has starting investigating the company’s operations, uncovering a sinister plot in the process.
Amazing Spider-Man #88.BEY (by Geoffrey Thorne, Jan Bazaldua, Jim Towe, Jim Campbell, and VC’s Joe Caramagna) shines a spotlight on Beyond Corporation’s actions outside of their branding of the new web-slinger. Brown was caught up in Beyond’s schemes following their shadowy buyout of his crowdfunding company, Fairgray. This leads to he and his wife Mindy conducting an investigation as to what the company is really up to and discovering a disturbing truth.
Hobie’s crowdfunding service was another aspect of the heroism he has been embracing since the events of King in Black. Having given up his villainous pursuits in favor of helping people in need, Fairgray’s files were full of cases like Yasmin Adir. Yasmin, a young woman whose body has been slowly crystalizing since she was caught in the midst of a superhero battle, is only one of hundreds of similar tragedies, all of whom Hobie could help by calling on his own superhero connections for aid. Unfortunately, Beyond Corporation now owns every piece of data that Fairgray had regarding these individuals, and it is only a matter of time before they inevitably begin calling on them.
Beyond Corporation has been sparing no expenses when it comes to turning Ben Reilly’s Spider-Man into their own corporate superhero. To that end, they have been reprogramming Ben into what can only be described as another Winter Soldier, and he is likely intended to be the first of many. If Beyond is looking to expand their reach in the world of copyrighted vigilantes, there would be no better place to start than with a literal call-list of young people with superpowers. It would be easy enough for Beyond to offer promises of a cure to entice an entirely new generation of powered beings into their grasp, ripe for exploitation.
It is fortunate that Mindy and Hobie are already on the case, although they prove to be unprepared for the challenge of dealing with Beyond. Even in his recently acquired guise as the new Hornet, Hobie is severely outmatched by the company’s resources.
Assuming Hobie can uncover the truth, he will still have to figure out what to do with it, and there is no doubt that Beyond will do everything in their power to ensure that never happens.
