Marvel’s new Spider-Man, Ben Reilly, just fought Morbius, and he suffered a major loss that sets up his greatest test.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #78, on sale now.
Since his debut, Morbius has grown from being a vampiric Spider-Man villain to being an anti-hero who protects from the shadows. Still, his more primal urges get the better of him on occasion, and he becomes more vampire than man. Since his transformation, Morbius has continuously looked for ways to better himself and fight his urges while encountering opposition that puts his abilities to the test. However, his powers, specifically his healing factor, is about to be pushed to its limits after a chance encounter with Ben Reilly, Peter Parker’s clone and the new Spider-Man
Ever since taking on the mantle of Spider-Man for the Beyond Corporation, Ben Reilly has been given the best of the best. His suit features some of the best offensive and defensive technologies that help to protect him from almost any form of attack his enemies throw at him. However, the one thing the suit didn’t fully account for is puncture wounds from the bite of a vampire. Picking up where the last issue left off, Amazing Spider-Man #78, by Kelly Thompson, Sara Pichelli, Jim Towe, Nolan Woodward, Rachelle Rosenberg and Joe Caramagna, kicks off with Morbius attacking Spider-Man just after biting him. Thankfully, Ben’s suit keeps him safe from any severe physical damage, but there’s no denying that Morbius’ bite has infected the web-slinger.
Because of Morbius’ affliction, many heroes in the Marvel Universe know that he isn’t always in control of his actions. As a result, many who face him try to subdue rather than attack. But when Morbius is in a frenzy, this also puts those trying to protect him at a greater risk. After swinging through the city, Ben leads Morbius to the entrance of the Beyond Corporation in hopes of discovering what has turned Morbius feral.
Once they get to their base, the Beyond Corporation’s intuitive security and can recognize Ben’s voice, heat signature and electromagnetic aura and lets him in. But when Morbius attempts to follow, the portal’s defenses see him as a threat and fires a laser that severs his arm from his body and instantly cauterizes the wound.
Aside from his vampire-like strength and speed, Morbius also has an accelerated healing factor that protects him from most injuries. That being said, one major drawback to his healing factor is that he can’t regrow lost limbs, like the one he just lost to the Beyond Corporation. Now, Morbius is at a major disadvantage, having never dealt with an injury so severe and already in an uncontrollable frenzy. While Ben was being treated for his bite, Colleen Wing and Misty Knight were tasked with subduing Morbius. Even though he put up a fight, his weakened state allowed the duo to make short work of him.
For the moment, his body shows no signs of growing a new limb. However, the Beyond Corporation may very well conduct its own research on Morbius that could end with him regrowing the appendage like another Spider-Man foe, the Lizard. Whether or not Morbius’ abilities will evolve to grow a new arm or maintain its current state remains to be seen, but Mirbius’ immediate future will test his powers like never before.
