Spider-Man: No Way Home is not expected to feature Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane, but she has an idea of what her role would be like were it to happen.
Of all the rumored character appearances in Sony Pictures’ upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man is not expected to be among them. But Dunst has an idea of the character’s status should that return ever happen.
“I’d be old MJ at this point with little Spidey babies,” Dunst told Variety, prefacing her comment noting that it’s not a role she would turn down. “I would do it. Why not? That would be fun. I would never say no to something like that.”
Dunst has denied she’s appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Dunst played MJ in 2002’s Spider-Man, 2004’s Spider-Man 2 and 2007’s Spider-Man 3, serving as Peter Parker’s eventual love interest while pursuing a career on Broadway. In the second film, Mary Jane discovers Peter and Spider-Man are one and the same, and subsequently leaves her would-be husband John Jameson at the altar to be with Peter. But Spider-Man’s encounter with the alien symbiote that later becomes Venom in the third film temporarily corrupts Peter’s personality, damaging his and MJ’s relationship. The movie ends with the couple on friendlier terms, but the ultimate fate of their relationship is never resolved.
There are various timelines in the comics, though, that would perfectly align with Dunst’s predictions. In 2015, Dan Slott and Adam Kubert kicked off the first of two subsequent series both titled Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, featuring alternate versions of Peter and MJ as a married couple, with their superpowered daughter Annie serving as the couple’s “little Spidey baby.” Previously, the long-running Spider-Girl series launched by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, published from 1998 to 2006, featured May “Mayday” Parker as the spider-powered daughter of Peter and Mary Jane from a different alternate universe. The series was later relaunched as The Amazing Spider-Girl, and was followed up with The Spectacular Spider-Girl.
In the main timeline of the comics, Peter and Mary Jane married and had a baby girl they named May, but the baby was later written out of continuity — and Peter and MJ’s marriage itself was retconned in Amazing Spider-Man’s “One Moment in Time” arc by Joe Quesada and Paolo Rivera in 2010.
MJ’s character did not appear in either The Amazing Spider-Man nor The Amazing Spider-Man 2 films starring Andrew Garfield. Shailene Woodley was to play the character in the second film, but her role was cut, and the third movie set to feature the character was never made.
Zendaya plays MJ in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, and will reprise the role in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home.
