Doctor Octopus is back, and in the four-issue Devil’s Reign tie-in series, he commands a team composed entirely of different versions of himself.
A new tie-in to Marvel’s upcoming Devil’s Reign event sees Doctor Octopus forming his own take on the Fantastic Four — totally composed of different versions of himself.
CBR has an exclusive preview of the cover for Devil’s Reign: Superior Four, a four-issue series penned by Zac Thompson (Marvelous X-Men, Undone by Blood) and penciled by Davide Tinto (Commanders in Crisis, Marvel Action Spider-Man). The book sees Otto Octavius forming a team composed of different versions of himself from Marvel’s multiverse, and the cover by Ivan Shavrin hints at appearances from the Ottos of Earths-614, 615 and 617.

- THE FANTASTIC ARE NO MORE. LONG LIVE…THE SUPERIOR FOUR.
- Otto Octavius has acquired a taste for the infinite. Empowered by Wilson Fisk, Doctor Octopus faces a tantalizing, unprecedented opportunity to scour the Multiverse, amassing an army of…himself. An army to march on our reality, proving Otto’s supremacy — and it all begins with his SUPERIOR FOUR!
Devil’s Reign is a far-reaching event spinning out of Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s Daredevil run. Wilson Fisk — also known as the Kingpin and the current New York City mayor — outlaws superheroes over the course of this event, targeting everyone from Daredevil and Elektra Natchios to Ben Reilly, who began filling in for Peter Parker as Spider-Man in Amazing Spider-Man #75.
“Participating in the huge scope of Chip and Marco’s Devil’s Reign event is thrilling,” Thompson said. “Getting to do it with a Doctor Octopus at the center is a dream come true. Superior Four is the type of insane premise that only works in comics and Davide and I are just having a blast. At its core, this is a demented Fantastic Four book where we’re taking a warped and weird journey through the Marvel multiverse except our ‘family’ is one comprised of four Otto Octavius variants. So there’s a lot of ego, hubris, and condescension along the way. While the adventure is kicked off from a yearning for Otto’s past as the Superior Spider-Man, it’s also going to answer questions about Ock’s future(s) in the Marvel U.”
Following a stint where his consciousness was placed within the body of Peter Parker in 2013 and 2014’s The Superior Spider-Man series, Doctor Octopus has swapped multiple bodies and wavered between heroism and falling back into his old patterns of villainy. 2019’s Superior Spider-Man #11 saw him making a deal with Mephisto to save a dying child, and this pact reverted him to his original form with only fading knowledge of the deeds and relationships that had slowly turned him into an anti-hero over time. Since then, Otto has been striving to fill the gaps in his memory, and most recently in September’s Sinister War #4, he saved Peter Parker’s life from the Sinful Six — showing that hints of his more altruistic side may still exist.
Devil’s Reign: Superior Four‘s release date has yet to be announced. Devil’s Reign #1 goes on sale on Dec. 1 from Marvel Comics.
