The upcoming Spider-Man comic book series promises to detail the hidden history surrounding one of Peter Parker’s most popular clones, Ben Reilly.
Influential writer J.M. Dematteis, best known for popular Spider-Man stories “Kraven’s Last Hunt” and Spider-Man: The Lost Years, returns to Marvel Comics with a new series center around Peter Parker’s clone, Ben Reilly, and his time as Spider-Man.
The new series, titled Ben Reilly: Spider-Man, finds Ben wrapped up in a murder investigation while a mysterious figure from his past returns. Does the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane hold the key to their identity? A new mystery is set to unfold during a unique moment in Spider-Man history.
“What I’ve always found fascinating about Ben Reilly is that he’s Peter Parker—and yet he’s not,” DeMatteis explained when speaking of the new series. “Life has taken Ben on a strange, twisted path and altered him, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse; but, like Peter, he’s a man who’s constantly striving to do the right thing, even if he doesn’t always succeed. Ben is wonderfully, painfully human, immensely relatable—and our new Ben Reilly: Spider-Man series allows me to dive even deeper into Ben’s psyche, to explore him in new and, I hope, interesting ways.”
Joining Dematteis on the new series is X-Factor and Domino artist David Baldeón. “Having David Baldeón bringing this story to visual life has been the icing on the cake. David’s work is incredibly dynamic. Fluid and powerful,” DeMatteis said of the artist. “He nails the big moments—we’ve got some major antagonists going up against Ben—but he always holds tight to the characters’ humanity, so that even the smallest, quietest moments shine and have resonance.”
Created by the Jackal from Peter Parker’s DNA, Ben made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #149 but was reimagined as Ben Reilly during the “Clone Saga”, adopting the moniker Scarlet Spider and eventually taking up the mantle of Spider-Man, complete with a brand new suit. Recently, Ben Reilly’s Spider-Man returned to The Amazing Spider-Man during Nick Spencer’s “Spider-Man Beyond” storyline.
“It’s been a true joy returning the Spider-Verse and reuniting with my old friend, Ben,” Dematteis said.
Written by J.M. Dematteis and illustrated by David Baldeón, Ben Reilly: Spider-Man hits store shelves in January 2022 for Marvel Comics.
