Spider-Man: No Way Home Continues to Crush the Box Office
Spider-Man: No Way Home stays strong at the box office as we swing into the new year. In its third week of release, it stayed at number one with a 3-day total of $52.7 million taking its domestic total to $610 million while globally it hit $1.37 billion making it the 12th biggest film ever worldwide.
The animated film, Sing 2, took the second slot with $19.6 million with the King’s Man a distant third with $4.5 million. The sports biography American Underdog was next with $4 million, Matrix Resurrections made a paltry $3.8 million and West Side Story is dead on arrival at only $2.1 million over the holiday weekend. Looking at the films releasing this month there is a chance that the film that will bump Spider-Man out of the top spot might end up being another Sony/Marvel film, Morbius, which is tied to the Spider-Man universe. The Jared Leto lead film is just one of four wide released films scheduled for January and has the larger potential audience than The 355, Sesame Street or The King’s Daughter.
Deadline reports that Spider-Man: No Way Home has now surpassed Disney’s 2016 Christmas hit Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($532.1M) and Warner Bros.’ top grossing stateside title of all-time, The Dark Knight ($534.8M), on the all-time box office domestic list. The Tom Holland-Zendaya-Benedict Cumberbatch ensemble movie will soon overtake Disney’s 2019 reboot of The Lion King ($543.6M, No. 11) with Disney/Pixar’s Incredibles 2 ($608.5M, No. 10) also in its sights.
Spider-Man: No Way Home shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. The sequel is on track to take down the global eight and nine slots in the coming weeks, Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($620 million) and The Avengers ($623 million), respectively.
In fact, the film even beat all other MCU movies released in 2021 combined. No other blockbuster released in the pandemic era has even come close to touching Spider-Man: No Way Home.
