Gunslinger Spawn’s history-making debut issue has been delayed due to industry-wide supply shortages, says Spawn creator Todd McFarlane.
Spawn creator Todd McFarlane explained why the debut issue of Gunslinger Spawn was suddenly delayed.
In a video posted on Twitter, McFarlane explained that industry-wide paper shortages got in the way of Gunslinger Spawn shipping out to retailers for its scheduled release date of Oct. 20. While the majority of the book’s variant covers were printed and sent to Diamond Comics Distributors, others were not. McFarlane offered up an apology to fans, saying “Sorry for that, it’s still coming. But it’s just the way of the pandemic world we live in. I’m dealing with that on the toy end too.”
Now set to be released on Oct. 27, Gunslinger Spawn #1 comes from the creative team of McFarlane, Aleš Kot, Kevin Keane, Brett Booth and Philip Tan. The book sold over 385,000 copies during its presale window, making it the biggest launch for a new superhero title in 25 years. One of the reasons for the success of the title is the variety of covers that fans can purchase, which in turn informed the book’s delay. Since many comic book shops bundle the different variants together, the missing covers would make it impossible for retailers to fulfill their orders. To make the lives of the comic shop employees easier, McFarlane informed fans that the decision was made for Diamond to delay its shipments of Gunslinger Spawn until it had all of the different covers available.
Gunslinger Spawn is the latest addition to Spawn’s Universe, a line of titles that began earlier this year. Building off of the success of the original Spawn series, the new books have each gone on to achieve increasingly impressive accolades. Spawn’s Universe #1, which was released in June, was the highest-selling Image Comics debut in two decades at the time of its release. This was then surpassed by King Spawn #1 in August, which shattered superhero sales records with nearly 500,000 copies sold. The next book to join the line will be the teams series The Scorched, which features Gunslinger Spawn, She-Spawn, Redeemer and Spawn himself.
Gunslinger Spawn stars Jeremy Winston, a former preacher from the Old West who gained the powers of the Hellspawn after the deaths of his family. The character debuted in 2002’s Spawn #119 and has been a fan-favorite ever since. Unlike other iterations of Spawn, who rely heavily on their symbiote, Gunslinger Spawn uses many weapons and pistols to compensate for his dwindling power meter reserves.
Outside of comics, the popularity of the Gunslinger Spawn character has translated into a new action figure release. Manufactured by McFarlane Toys, this new collectible continues the company’s legacy of high-end and low-cost Spawn memorabilia. Gunslinger Spawn will be joined by the Dark Redeemer and Soul Crusher for the series, which will retail at $24.99 each.
