Sonic the Hedgehog is speeding down a collision course with almost every enemy he’s faced before IDW PUblishing’s next event.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary FCBD Special, on sale now from IDW.
Sonic has faced an impressive menagerie of threats throughout the course of IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Whether it’s trading blows with an upgraded Metal Sonic or outpacing a robotic zombie outbreak, Sonic has run the odds and come out ahead every time.
Despite these victories, the path ahead of the Blue Blur isn’t getting any smoother. Not only are familiar foes like Dr. Eggman and the Deadly Six up to their old tricks, the ambitious newcomer Dr. Starline is ready to rock the world with his own sinister schemes. With the upcoming “Imposter Syndrome” miniseries poised to clear the way for the “War for the Empire” storyline, The Fastest Thing Alive is set on a collision course with almost every enemy he’s faced throughout the IDW run, as summarized in David Mariotte, Shawn Lee and Corey Breen’s recap in the Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary FCBD Special.
Sonic the Hedgehog‘s latest storylines saw several of Sonic’s adversaries making major strides in their machinations against the blue hedgehog and his friends. The most overt among them is the hedgehog’s iconic adversary Dr. Eggman. Fresh off his failure to enslave the world with a techno-organic virus, Eggman wastes no time getting back to his familiar routine. During the “Test Run!” storyline, the doctor creates a tower capable of bending the laws of physics within its walls in order to create and test run even deadlier machines. This tower nearly claims the lives of Sonic, Tails and Amy before they are saved by Tangle the Lemur and Belle the Tinkerer, the latter being a wooden Badnick created by Eggman himself during his tenure as the amnesiac and altruistic handyman Mr. Tinker. Learning of Belle’s existence does little to dim the doctor’s evil ambitions, however, and Eggman soon finds himself distracted by another issue.
That issue being the Deadly Six, a pack of powerful aliens with a grudge against both Sonic and Dr. Eggman. After usurping control of the Zombot virus from Eggman during the “All or Nothing” storyline, the Six were defeated by Sonic and his allies and left scattered around the globe. The mere reunification of the Six during the events of the “Zeti Hunt” storyline sees the destruction of several cities, and the Six’s brutal leader Zavok isn’t eager to stop there. Driven by his hatred against Sonic, Zavok leads the Six in a brutal assault against the headquarters of the Restoration, a relief organization whose membership includes many of Sonic’s friends. The Six’s superhuman strength and agility already make them deadly adversaries, but their unique ability to control technology allows them to threaten not only Sonic and the Restoration, but the Eggman Empire as well. And there’s still one more villain Sonic will have to deal with.
In between all of this Dr. Starline, a new addition to Sonic’s multi-media rogues’ gallery, is advancing his own agenda. Starting as an overly enthusiastic admirer of Dr. Eggman, Starline soon struck out on his own after the events of the Zombot outbreak exposed him to Eggman’s frustrating lack of forward planning. Arming himself with his own inventions and some of the doctor’s spare weaponry, the more cautious Starline takes advantage of Eggman and the Deadly Six’s less-than-subtle attempts on the lives of Sonic and his friends to further his own plans by collecting a tuft of Tails’ fur and abducting Belle during the Six’s attack on Restoration HQ. What exactly Starline has planned is unknown, but previews for “Imposter Syndrome” seem to hint that Starline is dabbling in some variety of cloning.
On their own, each of these villains is more than capable of giving Sonic a run for his money. However, as each of these villains draws closer to completing their ultimate plans, it’s looking more and more like their machinations will culminate at once during “War for the Empire.” How far will Starline take his war for scientific supremacy against Eggman? Could Belle’s plight bring out some of Mr. Tinker’s lingering affection within the doctor? How might the Deadly Six take advantage of the warring doctors to resume their own conquest? Can Sonic and co. find a way to stop them all? When it comes to Sonic, it looks like the old adage really does ring true; there is no rest for the wicked.
