The newest entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise features a massive open-world that hopes to make this a major evolution for the franchise.
The next installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has finally been given an announcement trailer and title, Sonic Frontiers. In the months since it was initially being teased during the Sonic 30th anniversary livestream, details of this new 3D adventure have been scarce. Finally, Sega has shares more about this new game after several teases.
While the Sonic the Hedgehog games have often been polarizing, the franchise has still maintained its popularity. Games like 2017’s Sonic Mania and other forms of media (particularly 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie) have reaffirmed that the Blue Blur is still capable of delighting audiences of all ages. Now, Sonic Frontiers looks to maintain some of that positive momentum to help push the games back in the right direction.
Sonic Frontiers’ New Trailer
Fans finally got to see Sonic Frontiers at The Game Awards 2021, alongside a trailer for the upcoming film Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Despite being just under a minute-and-a-half in length, the trailer showcases the game’s setting, along with small bits of gameplay. The trailer begins with Sonic running through a forest, in a continuation of the cinematic seen in the game’s first teaser.
After an ominous voice guides Sonic out of the forest, we get a look at the game’s main world, known as Starfall Islands. This locale features grassy plains, flower-filled fields, deserts and even ancient ruins in what looks like a larger version of the Mystic Ruins from Sonic Adventure. The trailer ends with Sonic being confronted by a massive robot, while the ominous voice warns him that the encounter will be dangerous.
Other News We Know About Sonic Frontiers
Even with this short trailer, details on Sonic Frontiers are still rather scarce. The biggest reveal about the game so far, though, is that it will feature “open-zone” gameplay. While it will most likely maintain the platformer/action-adventure roots of the franchise, it will be the first Sonic game to feature an open world. With Starfall Islands’ beautiful biomes, massive towers and robotic villains, Sonic Frontiers looks to be the franchise’s take on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Little is known about Sonic Frontiers‘ story, but it appears the game will center around Sonic’s biggest foe, Doctor Eggman, losing control of an ancient technology. Sonic must stop Eggman and rescue his friends from the imminent danger of this technology. One of the most exciting bits of news about Frontiers is that it will be written by Ian Flynn, who was the fan-favorite chief writer of the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie Comics series. Hopefully, he’ll be able to inject plenty of life into the story and help make this one of Sonic’s most exciting adventures yet.
When Does Sonic Frontiers Release?
Sonic Frontiers is currently set to release in late 2022. No official date has been provided yet, but many of Sonic’s previous major releases, including Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces were released in November, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Sega continue that trend. The game will also release on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
While Sonic’s 30th anniversary has been largely quiet outside of the re-release of Sonic Colors Ultimate, Sega looks to make up for that with an exciting 2022. Between Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers, the year is packed with exciting releases for fans of the Blue Blur.
