David Hayter, Metal Gear Solid actor and X-Men screenwriter, wonders if he’s the best choice to play the lead in the new Wolverine video game.
Though no one has been officially cast as the lead of Insomniac Games’ upcoming Wolverine game on PlayStation 5, voice actor David Hayter is hinting that he wants the role.
Hayter, best known for voicing Solid Snake and Big Boss in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, responded to a Twitter post wondering if he should voice Insomniac’s Wolverine, writing “I admit… I was thinking that.” This references Hayter’s history as a screenwriter on the X-Men film franchise, having received story credits for both Bryan Singer’s original 2000 film and its 2003 sequel X2.
Is Marvel’s Wolverine a Period Piece?
An official teaser for Marvel’s Wolverine was revealed at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase. The trailer shows Logan taking a drink in the aftermath of a massive bar fight, surrounded by unconscious (or dead) patrons. When one gets up and draws a knife, he extends his claws in retaliation, a reaction that seemingly mirrors the X-Men bar scene where Wolverine first reveals his claws to Rogue and the audience.
In response to a comment made under his post, Hayter confirmed that he was directly involved with helping Hugh Jackman construct that moment, writing “Yes, I sat at Hugh’s seat at the bar, made up the scene, and suggested this pose.”
Previous actors who have lent their voices to Wolverine for video games include Mark Hamill in X2: Wolverine’s Revenge, Jackman in the game adaptation of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Steve Blum across several games including X-Men Legends, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Lego Marvel Super Heroes.
Little is currently known about PlayStation’s Wolverine game. Creative director on the project Brian Horton recently took to Twitter to clarify that the game will feature a mature tone and will be a “full size” experience. Eagle-eyed fans also spotted various Easter Eggs included in the trailer, including a reference to Wolverine’s first appearance in the Marvel universe.
In addition to Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac also revealed the first trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a sequel to its acclaimed 2018 PlayStation exclusive and its 2020 spin-off Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The trailer features Peter Parker and Miles Morales confronting Venom, voiced by Tony Todd, for the first time while a voiceover character expresses his desire to find “an equal.” While it’s currently unconfirmed, fans speculate that the narrator’s voice belongs to iconic Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter.
Insomniac Games has yet announce a release date for Marvel’s Wolverine but the game will be launching exclusively for PlayStation 5. Whether Insomniac Games’ latest superhero adventure also comes to PlayStation 4 remains to be seen.
