Clark Kent was not the only superpowered individual in Smallville. Like the DC Comics Smallville was based on, Smallville was populated by a plethora of beings with superpowers. Some obtained these powers through scientific experimentation, some through exposure to meteor rocks from Krypton, and some through magical means.
Clark displayed unusual talents from the moment he landed on Earth. Most superpowered characters in Smallville started out as regular human beings, obtaining extraordinary abilities one way or another. Some of their granted powers would stick, while others were temporary. Either way, Smallville had no shortage of strong characters over its ten season run.
10 Jonathan’s “Gift” From Jor-El
Jonathan Kent would sacrifice anything for his family. It’s a valiant character trait that comes with drawbacks. In the season three premiere Exile, Jonathan makes a deal with Jor-El. Subsequently, Jonathan is temporarily gifted the same powers as Clark in order to break Clark’s red kryptonite addiction and bring him home.
They battle, but the incredible powers of a Kryptonian prove too much for Jonathan’s heart. Though he would recover, this one act of dedication would strain Jonathan’s body to its breaking point. Jonathan is a caring father, but also stubborn. Seeing him on par with Clark, even for an episode, was pretty enjoyable.
9 Booster Gold, Earth’s Greatest Hero
The self-appointed greatest hero ever known, Booster Gold, travels back in time from the 25th century seeking fame and fortune as he tries to upstage Clark as Metropolis’s number one hero. Booster possesses no superpowers himself. He relies on the advanced tech of the 25th century to create the illusion of possessing incredible powers.
With an advanced suit, a ring from the Legion of Superheroes and an AI named Skeets, Booster mimics abilities such as flight, super strength, energy projection, and time travel. Despite his unlikeable attitude, Booster always proves himself a true hero.
8 Victor Stone Becomes Cyborg
Victor Stone was a prolific wide receiver for the Metropolis High football team. After a near fatal car accident, Victor was experimented on and given cybernetic enhancements. Victor’s internal body is now completely comprised of an endoskeleton.
His cybernetic body, hidden beneath a layer of fake skin, grants him many powers and abilities. These include super strength and speed, and the ability to hack into and overwrite any computer he connects to. Oliver Queen quickly recognized Victor’s gifts, dubbing him Cyborg and inviting him to the original Justice League team.
7 Pete Ross Gets Meteor Powers
Pete Ross was Clark Kent’s childhood best friend. Clark kept his secret hidden from everyone, except his parents, until his second year of high school. After Pete unknowingly discovered Clark’s missing spaceship, Clark revealed his true lineage to him. Though hesitant at first, Pete grew even closer to Clark and proved a loyal ally.
Though the actor left Smallville after season three, Pete returned for one episode in the seventh season. After eating gum that had been apparently made from ingredients containing meteor rock radiation, Pete temporarily gained elasticity and got to experience being a superhero.
6 Davis Bloome Becomes Doomsday
Davis Bloome worked as a paramedic at Metropolis General Hospital. He was first introduced in season eight and developed a relationship with Chloe. Davis gradually developed superpowers – super strength and the ability to heal from any injury.
The horrifying truth of Davis’s powers were eventually revealed. He learned that his human form was merely a disguise for the monster, Doomsday – a scientific abomination comprised of DNA from Krypton’s most feared creatures. Davis soon developed the same powers of Clark before fully transforming into the iconic monster.
5 Eric Summers & The Meteor-Infected
Eric Summers was a typical high school student who attended Smallville High. He lived a fairly normal life until an accident exposed him to meteor rocks (and a bolt of lightning, and Clark Kent) that granted him superpowers. Eric temporarily became the strongest person in Smallville, stealing Clark’s powers on two occasions.
From seasons one to four, in Smallville‘s high school era, the show functioned on a monster-of-the-week formula, or meteor freak-of-the-week. The meteor rocks that fell to Earth (alongside Kal-El’s spaceship) provided an easy, convenient narrative explanation for new, weekly villains for Clark to fight.
4 Chloe Sullivan, Super Genius
Chloe Sullivan had always been a bright student, with persistent determination to reach high roles in journalism. As Smallville progressed, Chloe’s technological smarts increased. She could dig up latent information faster than anyone and could hack into surveillance cameras. For all intents and purposes, she became Clark’s person in the chair.
Through meteor rock exposure she would develop temporary powers, able to heal others with her tears and encouraging truth-telling. After being infected with a Braniac virus in season eight, Chloe temporarily possessed superhuman intelligence with abilities that surpassed super computers.
3 Lana Gives Off Kryptonite Radiation
Lana Lang had been the victim of many attacks, some nearly fatal if it weren’t for Clark. By season two, she began training in hand-to-hand combat under Lex, determined to be self-reliant. From that point, as long as her opponent wasn’t superpowered, Lana could easily hold her own in a fight.
Lana returned in season eight with superhuman strength and speed, nearly matching a Kryptonian’s. Lana obtained these powers with a suit designed by Project Prometheus that infused her body with nanites. The side effect of these nanites also coated her cells in kryptonite radiation, forcing her to exile herself from Clark’s life.
2 Zod Uses Lex Luthor As His Vessel
When the meteor shower hit Smallville, a visiting Lex Luthor was trapped in a cornfield and exposed, losing his hair in the process. Though never explicitly stated, Lex developed an immunity to poison, which was proven after surviving a dose that would have been fatal for anyone.
In season five, Lex slowly developed superhuman enhancements. What seemed like a gift turned out to be a priming for General Zod to use Lex’s body as a vessel. For a brief time, Lex possessed the same abilities as Clark as well as flight. When Zod’s soul was eventually ripped from Lex’s body, the Kryptonian powers went with him.
1 Jor-El’s Consciousness In The Fortress Of Solitude
Viewers had only ever heard Jor-El’s voice (voiced by Terence Stamp who played General Zod in the Richard Donner Superman films), but in season seven, we finally saw Jor-El in the flesh. He was, like most native Kryptonians on their home world, powerless. Only a Kryptonian exposed to Earth’s yellow sun would gain Superman-like powers.
Jor-El mainly existed as a memory or consciousness in the Fortress of Solitude. But, he was an extremely powerful force that could manipulate Clark, his friends, and the world itself. He could grant them powers, take them away, and even allow Clark to travel back in time.
