Showtime’s The Man Who Fell to Earth Adds Star Trek’s Kate Mulgrew

Star Trek: Voyager star Kate Mulgrew joins the cast of Showtime’s upcoming adaptation of The Man Who Fell to Earth in the role of Drew Finch.

Emmy nominee Kate Mulgrew has joined the cast of Showtime’s upcoming adaptation of The Man Who Fell to Earth.

According to Deadline, Mulgrew has signed on to play a character named Drew Finch. Finch is described as a CIA operative and collector of secrets who is both emotionally fearless and a master at exploiting weak links. Finch is also defined by a number of secrets from her own past, which she must fight to keep.

Based on the Walter Tevis novel of the same name, The Man Who Fell to Earth will star Doctor Strange‘s Chiwetel Ejiofor as an alien named Thomas Jerome Newton, who arrives on Earth at a vital point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine the future of the human race. The 1976 film adaptation of The Man Who Fell to Earth starred late musician David Bowie in the lead role.


Best known for her portrayal of Capt. Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, Mulgrew will reprise the role in the upcoming animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. She also starred as Galina “Red” Reznikov in all seven seasons of the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black and most recently starred as Alma Lane in Season 3 of Mrs. Mercedes.

The Man Who Fell to Earth was initially ordered straight to series at CBS All Access in August 2019, but was put on hold. While it was expected to premiere Paramount+, the new and improved version of CBS All Access, it is now expected to premiere on Showtime in 2022. The series is being written and executive produced by Star Trek: Discovery producers Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, who will also serve as showrunners alongside executive producer John Hlavin. Kurtzman is also set to direct multiple episodes.

In other Showtime-related news, the premium cable network teased the first footage from its upcoming Dexter revival during Comic-Con@Home 2021 in July. The clip opened with the infamous serial killer (Michael C. Hall) telling an unidentified narrator, “Well, it’s been a whirlwind.” The teaser also features footage of blood and knives. Fans will recall the original Dexter series wrapped in 2013 after eight seasons, with it being revealed in the series finale that the serial killer was alive and working as a lumberjack up north. The new season will consist of 10 episodes and premiere on Showtime on Sunday, Nov. 7.
