Shoto Todoroki of My Hero Academia isn’t just the son of a famous superhero (now the Number One Pro Hero since All Might retired), but he is also a wielder of both fire and ice powers. His opposing abilities afford him great strength and power, making his Quirk one of the most enviable and revered in the show.
Todoroki is not the only anime character with abilities that balance out. From clashing elemental powers to random abilities that just seem to synergize perfectly, here are seven anime characters (plus Shoto Todoroki) who have abilities that balance one another out.
8 Shoto’s Half Cold, Half Hot Quirk Is Formidable In My Hero Academia
Shoto Todoroki’s father, Enji Todoroki (better known by his hero name, Endeavor), very problematically attempted to create an ultimate Quirk by marrying and having kids with a woman with an ice Quirk to compliment his fire Quirk. However, the only kid to demonstrate his desired abilities was Shoto, who had the Half Cold, Half Hot Quirk.
This ability allowed him to simultaneously use ice and fire powers, making Shoto one of the strongest heroes in U.A. However, for the longest time, he tried to avoid using his fire powers because of his father’s abuse.
7 Josuke Higashikata’s Stand, Crazy Diamond, Has The Ability To Destroy And Reform In Diamond Is Unbreakable
Crazy Diamond, Josuke Higashikata’s Stand, also has two abilities that at first do not seem opposing. However, after further consideration, his two abilities are very different yet very useful. First off, Crazy Diamond has incredible strength and speed, meaning he can blast through most things with his punches.
On top of that, he can disassemble and reassemble objects and people, allowing him to hurt or heal. Thus, his destructive potential combined with his ability to heal and rearrange make for two powerful abilities when used together.
6 The Avatar Has Two Sets Of Balancing Abilities
The Avatar is all about liminality and being between two opposites. On the one hand, they are human and are deeply obligated to the material world. However, they are also imbued with spiritual energy and have the ability to bridge the gap to the spirit world and all its spirits while also being able to channel that spiritual energy.
If that is not enough, they can bend all four elements, each of which is in opposition or in sync. Most obvious are the oppositions between fire and water.
5 Sasuke Uchiha’s Sharingan Pairs Well With His Chidori In Naruto
While Sasuke Uchiha’s two abilities do not oppose one another, they certainly balance one another out. In fact, his signature Chidori, or lightning blade, would be unusable and highly volatile if not for the predictive and fast reading skills of his Sharingan.
His Sharingan is what makes him able to aim and properly use his Chidori, and his Chidori is a move he relies on since Kakashi Hatake taught it to him. Kakashi even said that only he and Sasuke were able to use the Chidori thanks to their lightning affinity and their Sharingans.
4 Demon Slayer’s Tanjiro Has Water And Fire Based Sword Techniques
While it has been noted that the elemental imagery is mainly symbolic, Tanjiro Kamado also has two sword techniques that balance one another out. He first learned the Water Breathing Technique when learning with Sakonji, who worked with the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka.
However, later, Tanjiro is shown using not only the Dance of the Fire God (Hinokami Kagura) against one of the Twelve Kizuki, Rui, but he also has a connection to Sun Breathing, a technique that encompasses many of the styles. However, there is still conjecture about the dynamic between Flame Breathing and Sun Breathing.
3 Sukuna Can Cut Deep Or Heal In Jujutsu Kaisen
Sukuna, or the King of Curses, was hailed and feared as the strongest Cursed Spirit. However, from what fans have seen so far, his technique is visually pretty simple. Sukuna typically makes a single slicing cut at his enemies, though he has been shown to be able to expand upon this during his fight with the Mahoraga.
However, while slicing is his primary mode of injuring others, he also has the ability to un-slice. He can even heal others past the point of death, just as he did with Yuji Itadori after he had ripped Itadori’s heart out.
2 Sypha Can Use Fire Or Ice Magic In Castlevania
Sypha Belnades has many abilities as a magic-wielding speaker, but two of her favorite magical tactics involves the creation of ice and flame. She has used these two spells during many fights, from creating ice spikes to throwing fireballs. While this is not the extent of her magic by any means, they are some of her favorites to use during a fight, and it is easy to see why because they are so effective.
These abilities make her one of the more powerful characters in Castlevania and she is often shown outpacing the monster hunter himself, Trevor Belmont.
1 The Mizukage Can Use Boil Release In Naruto
In a completely different way than Sasuke Uchiha’s methods with the Sharingan and the Chidori, Mei, the Mizukage, can combine two opposing nature affinities to create something new, Boil Release. Instead of relying on two abilities to work apart from one another but synergistically, Boil Release mixes them together at their conception.
Combining these releases is nothing new to the shinobi world. Hashirama Senju was famous for his Wood Release that combined earth and water. However, it is unique to see these diametrically opposed forces working in tandem to create such a formidable and caustic ability.
