Trailers for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings revealed a fight between Wong and the Abomination. Here’s who wins.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, now in theaters.
Among the most surprising revelations from early trailers for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was the inclusion of Wong and the Abomination, engaged in a hard-hitting cage match. With Benedict Wong reprising his role as Doctor Strange’s longtime ally, and Tim Roth making his first appearance as the Abomination since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, the fight is a strong reminder that Shang-Chi is firmly set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And while the brawl may not be overly important to Shang-Chi‘s plot, there is a definite winner publicly crowned by its end.
After realizing his estranged younger sister Xialing is in danger after operatives working for his father Wenwu ambush him in San Francisco, Shang-Chi and his best friend Katy travel to the neon-lit wonders of Macau. Xialing is revealed to own and run a seedy nightclub that offers its patrons the chance to wager on martial-arts fights of all levels of notoriety and skill. The main event this night is between the Abomination and Wong, with both men appearing to accept the fight of their own, respective volition. And as Shang-Chi and Katy watch, the fight is joined in earnest, with Wong matching the Abomination’s raw might with his mastery over magic.
While Wong is able to use his magic shields to properly guard against the Abomination’s opening attacks, the monster’s brute force quickly proves to be a handful, knocking Wong around the ring. Growing visibly frustrated over how the fracas is going, Wong uses his Sling Ring to summon two portals just over the Abomination’s head and maneuvers his opponent into accidentally punching himself through the portals, effectively turning the much stronger fighter’s own strength against him. Shang-Chi and Katy watch as Wong is crowned the champion and bets made on the fierce showdown are collected.
Of course, Wong isn’t only engaging in fights with supervillains just for kicks. As Wong uses his Sling Ring to transport himself and the Abomination back home, it appears he is actually leading his opponent back to his maximum-security cell before someone notices his absence. More amusingly, Wong and the Abomination’s departing conversation reveals there is no apparent animosity between the two fighters; Wong has been coaching Abomination on making the fight look real to help raise the bets. Leaving Macau, Wong lightly chastises the Abomination for coming at him a little harder than they had practiced, with the Abomination admitting he got caught up in the moment.
That revelation suggests the Abomination has been incarcerated since the climactic battle of The Incredible Hulk, but enjoys the occasional — if unsanctioned — reprieve thanks to Wong’s magic portals. As for Wong, who revealed he was strapped for cash in Avengers: Infinity War when making a lunch order with Strange: The fixed fights in Xialing’s club offer steady revenue, provided she never catches on to their ruse.
To see the Abomination take on Wong, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters now.
