Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings VFX supervisor Christopher Townsend addressed a multiversal fan theory about the Ten Rings.
Speaking to Comicbook.com, Townsend remained tight-lipped when asked whether the Ten Rings are a product of the multiverse. “I mean, one of the great things about MCU is the intertwined nature of all aspects, which I think is one of the fun parts of working in these films,” Townsend said. “So I don’t want to say more, to be honest.”
Townsend added that Avengers films are great examples of how the Marvel Cinematic Universe can connect stories together, and how fans can expect to find answers in future projects. “I think that we just need to let it sort of evolve. Because often it is an evolving thing, that as one story arc happens in a film, it then spurs other conversations and other story arcs and then eventually,” he explained. “I think Endgame particularly, and Infinity War were great in sort of bringing a lot of those loose ends back together. And I think that you are going to see more of that as the MCU develops.”
The Shang-Chi post-credits scene saw Wong, portrayed by Doctor Strange‘s Benedict Wong, discuss the origin of the Ten Rings with fellow Avengers Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers. None of the team could figure out where the rings came from, although they did notice that the rings were sending out a signal to an unknown recipient.
Some fans believe the Ten Rings could’ve originated in a different timeline and could be linked to Kang the Conqueror, who will be portrayed in the MCU by Jonathan Majors. As the rings allow their wearer to live eternally, some Marvel fans suggested a variant of He Who Remains from the Loki series finale, also played by Majors, originally held the rings before placing them in the sacred timeline for Shang-Chi’s father Wenwu to find.
It’s likely that fans will discover more about the Ten Rings in Shang-Chi 2, which was announced back in December, with Simu Liu confirmed to return in the starring role. Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is also set to return for the sequel and will helm a new Disney+ show, although it is unknown if the series will be related to Shang-Chi.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is available to stream on Disney+.
