Shang-Chi screenwriter Dave Callaham says they filmed two different origin stories for the Ten Rings, but ultimately abandoned both.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings screenwriter Dave Callaham recently admitted that they actually filmed two different versions of scenes explaining the origin of the Ten Rings for the film.
“There were scenes shot for the movie that suggested one origin,” Callaham told Inverse. “There were scenes shot later that suggested a different origin. We didn’t know which one we wanted to say it was.”
The screenwriter added, however, that they ultimately decided to leave the specifics of the Rings’ origin out of the film as a Marvel Cinematic Universe secret that could be solved at a later date.
“We intentionally chose that as the final version,” Callaham continued. “We realized, in these two hours, it doesn’t make any difference at all where it comes from. That’s not the story we’re telling. But it sure is an interesting question we’d love to talk about later. Or someone will.”
While the backstory of the Ten Rings was left vague in the film, Marvel Comics fans will recall that the Ten Rings first came to Earth as alien relics, which were left behind in a spaceship. In the Shang-Chi comics, the Ten Rings are also depicted as being worn on Wenwu’s fingers, with each one featuring a unique shape and color. Each ring also has a specific power, whether that be fire projection, darkness control or matter rearrangement.
In related news, Digital VFX head Sean Walker also recently revealed that the look of the Ten Rings initially more closely resembled the relics from the comics. “The Ten Rings actually went through a range of color changes,” Walker said at the time. “At one point, each individual effect had its individual styled use of the Rings. For example, when Wenwu is creating a bustle out of them, or a whip, or projectiles, they actually had their own unique color scheme, they were all in a similar color palette.”
Released in theaters on Sept. 3, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings surpassed the $250 million mark at the worldwide box office on Sept. 12 and is on track to surpass Black Widow as the highest-grossing Hollywood movie released during the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now playing in theaters. The film will make its streaming premiere on Disney+ on Nov. 12, which will be the inaugural Disney+ Day.
