Shang-Chi Director Clarifies Where the Film Fits in the MCU Timeline

[ad_1]

Destin Daniel Cretton confirms where exactly Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton confirmed his Phase 4 entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

While speaking to Fandango, Cretton clarified that Shang-Chi‘s story will unfold “present day in the MCU timeline.” As a prequel film, Black Widow is the only current cinematic entry in the MCU’s burgeoning Phase 4, meaning Shang-Chi will have to perform double-duty. Not only will the upcoming film introduce moviegoing audiences to a new hero from Marvel Comics lore but also attempt to move the needle of Marvel’s post-Blip storytelling forward.

Since Endgame, only one subsequent MCU film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, has tackled the aftermath of post-Blip existence head-on. Through Marvel’s expanding television universe, fans have been further clued into certain aspects of the messy reality faced by established heroes navigating a world where half the population disappeared, only to return five years later.

Existing in a sitcom bubble of Wanda Maximoff’s creation, WandaVision only touched slightly on the emotional implications of the Blip, while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier delved deeper into the global political fallout of such an event. Cretton didn’t specify whether Shang-Chi will attempt to explore a certain element of post-Blip existence or if it will address the larger multiverse introduced in Marvel Studios’ latest entry, Loki.

Despite Cretton’s confirmation of Shang-Chi‘s post-Blip setting, questions of the multiverse currently loom somewhat larger in fans’ minds. The director skillfully obfuscated questions about how the multiversal implications of Loki‘s season finale may have impacted his film, indicating that Shang-Chi‘s role in the MCU may pack some surprises for fans. Loki‘s introduction of Kang the Conqueror and the impending Phase 4 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have led audiences to believe that the multiverse, and all its infinite possibilities, will play a crucial role in Marvel’s next storytelling phase.

While fans hope to have their questions answered soon, the theatrically exclusive Sept. 3 release for Shang-Chi has evoked a mixed response as COVID-19 cases continue to spike in many regions. Disney CEO Bob Chapek recently referred to Shang-Chi‘s upcoming 45-day theatrical run as an experiment, after Black Widow‘s hybrid theatrical and Disney+ release led to a lawsuit between the studio and Natasha Romanoff actor Scarlett Johansson. Shang-Chi star Simu Liu rejected Disney’s experiment comment, noting that he’s fired up to make Marvel history.

Marvel’s first film featuring a majority Asian and Asian American cast, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Liu as the titular hero and features performances from Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung and Tim Roth.
