Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton says the recently-announced sequel is in the early planning stages.
The recently-announced sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings likely won’t enter production for quite some time. However, writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton says that early story planning for the Master of Kung Fu’s next solo film is underway.
During a recent interview with Collider, Cretton was asked if he’s done any actual writing on Shang-Chi 2 as of yet, or if the film’s story details are still being ironed out. “I’ve done [zero],” he replied. “It’s a fun place to be right now. Everything is a possibility. We’re just tossing very loose ideas around and we’ll start to hone in on something, hopefully.”
When asked if there were any ideas he had during the first film’s development that he’d like to utilize in the sequel, Cretton said, “There are a lot of ideas that we had in the opener, and some of those ideas are planted as questions, by the end of our movie.” The director continued, “There are things that we potentially want to explore in the future. Everything changes so much, so it’s hard to say how many of those ideas will actually make it to the finish line, but there are many of them there.”
Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings released in theaters earlier this year on Sept. 3 as the 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second feature film to be released as part of Phase Four, following Black Widow. Shang-Chi was also the first MCU movie to debut exclusively in movie theaters since Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019. The film was directed by Cretton from a screenplay he co-wrote with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham. The screenplay was itself based on a story by Callaham and Cretton.
Shang-Chi made $75.5 million at the box office over its opening weekend — the second-best opening weekend for any film since the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in early 2020, right behind the aforementioned Black Widow. At the time of writing, the Cretton-helmed Marvel film has grossed $432 million worldwide. Shang-Chi was also met with overwhelmingly positive reception, currently holding a “Certified Fresh” rating of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an audience score of 98 percent.
A week ago, it was reported that Cretton had signed a deal to write and direct a sequel to Shang-Chi, as well as helm an unspecified Marvel Studios series for the Disney+ streaming service, which is said to be a comedy. “Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings,” said Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. “We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”
