Shadowman Goes ‘Full On Anime’ Against Zombies As Deadside War Begins (Exclusive)

Jack Boniface shows no mercy as he unleashes his sickle on a horde of zombies in Shadowman #5, the beginning of Valiant’s “Deadside War” event.

Shadowman is up against the hordes of the zombie apocalypse, and a spectacular amount of carnage is about to ensue.

CBR has an exclusive look at Shadowman #5, which continues the 2021 series following its half-year hiatus after July’s issue #4. A promo image drawn by Jon Davis-Hunt, who also penciled the series’ first story arc, teases that issue #5 will be the first part of “Deadside War” — an event which will echo throughout the Valiant Universe and see Jack Boniface teaming up with fan-favorite British voodoo priestess Punk Mambo. Black and white preview images of issue #5, illustrated by Pedro Andreo (Bloodshot), show Jack in his guise as Shadowman, showing no mercy to the walking dead as he introduces them to the sharp end of his sickle.

“Shadowman was one of the Valiant characters that interested me the most when I came upon their universe years ago,” Andreo said. “Working on ‘The Deadside War’ alongside Cullen Bunn, Jordie Bellaire, Clayton Cowles, Senior Editor Lysa Hawkins and everyone else is truly a career highlight! Cullen’s script was specific about everything that took place in these panels, but it let me go wild on the shots, angles and movement, so I went full anime on them. I had a lot of fun doing the kinetic effects and such crazy panels full of detail, gore and action.”

Andreo added that he hoped that his art — which will eventually be colored by Jordie Bellaire for the final book — evoked all the frenzied feelings that one might feel if zombies actually invaded from the eerie land of the deceased known as the Deadside.

“I wanted to capture the horror, stress and oppression that an actual zombie attack would have in a city that wasn’t expecting it, as it happens in this issue,” Andreo explained. “I couldn’t decide on whether I wanted slow zombies or running zombies so I went with a little bit of both. Both types of zombies! Could you imagine? That would be a nightmare.”

In previous issues of Shadowman, writer Cullen Bunn (The Damned, X-Men: Blue) has depicted Jack Boniface investigating regions called Blights, where the Deadside leaks out into the real world. Aside from destroying demons emerging from these areas, Jack also encountered a mysterious woman connected to the Blights who appears to be the Deadside taking on a physical form.

Bunn previously told CBR that the Deadside’s physical manifestation would usher in a “cataclysmic” crisis, and also teased the possible return of Master Darque, Shadowman’s longtime nemesis.

Shadowman #5 goes on sale Jan. 19, 2022 from Valiant Entertainment.
