Candy Cartwright, who last year sued WWE wrestler Matt Riddle for alleged sexual assault, is now filing for a dismissal of the lawsuit.
Candy Cartwright has dropped her lawsuit against WWE’s Matt Riddle after accusing him of sexual assault in 2020.
The circumstances of the dismissal, filed on Monday, are unclear. Cartwright’s attorney John Chwarzynski Jr. was quoted as simply saying, “The parties have put this in their past and are focused on the future,” according to TMZ.
Cartwright, herself a pro wrestler whose real name is Samantha Tavel, filed a lawsuit against WWE and EVOLVE Wrestling in addition to Riddle, following a social media post that she made as part of the #SpeakingOut movement, which aimed to expose sexual misconduct in the wrestling industry. She described an incident between herself and Riddle, in which he choked her and forced her to perform oral sex, that allegedly occurred in May 2018. She also accused him of sexually assaulting her in a parking lot in April 2017.
At the time, Chwarzynski said in a statement, “The lawsuit was filed against each defendant seeking $10 million each. There’s an issue with each defendant and it needs to be addressed within professional wrestling. WWE has profited from toxic misogyny since its inception.”
Riddle denied all accusations and maintained that he was the one who had been harassed by Cartwright, and that the two had been involved in an affair but that he had never assaulted her. Despite the allegations, Riddle continued to perform as a featured member of WWE’s SmackDown brand.
