One of the X-Men tie-ins to 2015’s Secret Wars gave two unlikely mutants their own Luke and Leia bond from Star Wars and turned it into a tragedy.
One of the most infamous retcons to the original Star Wars series revealed that Luke and Leia were actually brother and sister, making their earlier flirtations in the original film a bit weird in retrospect. But at least their version of that storyline didn’t take as dark of a turn as the X-Men’s version.
The Secret Wars tie-in mini-series Years of Future Past (by Marguerite Bennett and Mike Norton) ended up giving its X-Men variants their own surprising Star Wars moment, effectively turning the children of Kate Pryde and Colossus into a mutant version of Luke and Leia Skywalker.
One of the realms introduced as a part of Emperor Doom’s Battleworld in Secret Wars was known as the Sentinel Territories. Inspired by the reality introduced in the seminal “Days of Future Past” storyline, the mini-series largely focused on the children of this world’s Colossus and Kate Pryde — Cameron and Christina. The former was born before the collapse of the human government in this realm and was rescued from imprisonment by Wolverine. Taking Cameron under his wing, Logan raised the young man as if he were his own. Meanwhile, Pryde gave birth to their daughter, Christina, while in the camp. Concerned that information about Cameron’s survival could lead to extended purges of remaining mutants, Pryde and Colossus kept his existence a secret from the world.
Cameron’s ability was similar to his mother’s, allowing him to effectively phase and pass through objects. Christina meanwhile was born with a power similar to her father. But whereas her father’s metal form was stable and solid, Christina’s was more fluid and was capable of morphing her limbs into weapons. The two wouldn’t meet properly until they were teenagers and quickly developed a bond, with Christina often asking Logan about him. The relationship between the two was almost romantic in nature, and while there was no physical intimacy, it came as a major shock when the siblings learned the truth about their shared parentage. Notably, Cameron even compared their relationship to that of Luke and Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy.
While Luke and Leia eventually moved past this initial confusion and remained close, Christina and Cameron suffered a far more tragic fate. As two of their domain’s youngest mutants, competing machinations from various sources sought to use the pair as martyrs to their respective causes. Although Christina remained convinced that they could save Robert Kelly and bring about peace between humans and mutants, Cameron eventually lost his faith. He decided that mutants as a whole had caused nothing but strife in their reality and were better off dead. After Cameron terminated Kelly and nearly caused the widespread extermination of the remaining mutants, Christina killed her brother to stop his campaign of madness.
The fate of Chrissy and Cameron is a strangely somber story, hinting at what could have potentially awaited Luke and Leia in Star Wars. The eventual death of Cameron even plays out like a moment from the films, particularly Kylo Ren’s murder of his father in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While it’s an odd place to find such a take on a classic element of the films, Secret Wars: Years of Future Past takes a darker swing than anything ever seen in a Star Wars story.
