As Barry takes on the Reverse-Flash, the fate of the Arrowverse is in the balance. Here’s a spoiler-filled recap of The Flash’s latest episode.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 8, Episode 4, “Armageddon, Part 4,” which aired Tuesday, December 7th on The CW.
The penultimate episode of the latest Arrowverse crossover event “Armageddon” is here, with Barry Allen desperately racing to the future to see if predictions about his descent into madness and ushering in the apocalypse are true. And as the Flash is horrified to discover a vision of Central City with his arch-nemesis the Reverse-Flash now evidently calling the shots, he must find a way to restore reality and return to his own time before it is too late to alter the speedster supervillain’s latest machinations.
In Central City 2031, the Arrowverse heroes awkwardly reconnect for the wedding of Eobard Thawne and Iris West, with Iris advising Ryan Wilder on having a child with Sophie Moore while it’s clear that Allegra Garcia and Chester P. Runk have parted ways for some time. With the nuptials interrupted by a confused Barry Allen, the time-displaced Barry tries to prove that he is the Flash by putting on his costume, only to discover his ring contains a fitted Reverse-Flash costume. Thawne counters this by suiting up as the Flash while he and the Arrowverse heroes attack Barry, with Barry’s unseen history as the Reverse-Flash revealing that he apparently murdered several important Arrowverse characters, including the Legends of Tomorrow and Cisco Ramon.
Barry manages to retreat with Iris back to her home, unsuccessfully attempting to remind her of their past lives together, only to be interrupted and hauled by Thawne. The sneering supervillain confirms he created a Reverse-Flashpoint, starting by planting radioactive material in S.T.A.R. Labs to cause its shutdown, killing Joe West six months prior to the start of “Armageddon” and posed as the Flash attacking civilians. However, realizing that Barry is now stronger than him, Thawne noted that the only way to beat the Flash would be by becoming the Flash himself, ensuring he was the one struck by lightning in 2013 and becoming his own Scarlet Speedster to lead this vision of Team Flash while getting Iris to fall in love with him.
With Barry still weakened by the procedure he attempted with Black Lightning, he is shocked to learn he lacks the connection to this reality’s Speed Force and that Thawne succeeded in killing the Barry of this timeline as an infant. With Barry only having hours to restore reality before this version of the Arrowverse’s timeline solidifies, he approaches Damien Darhk, who is alive and well in this timeline and a partner with this timeline’s Reverse-Flash. While Damien figures out the truth about Barry, he learns that the version of himself in the main Arrowverse timeline sacrificed himself to save his daughter Nora. With the Nora of the Reverse-Flashpoint reality dead, Damien agrees to work with Barry to restore the original timeline with a device invented by Ray Palmer and the Time Stone.
Given the number of changes that need to be made and Barry’s diminished speed in this reality, Barry realizes that the amount of traction he will need to initiate this change and open a time portal will result in the destruction of the Reverse-Flashpoint reality, echoing Despero’s predictions of Barry destroying the world. Though Barry laments the possibility of success is incredibly slim, Damien convinces him that it’s worth the risk. Approaching Iris before embarking on his epic race, she begins to remember her true feelings for him, shooting Thawne with a specially designed gun to give Barry a headstart while Damien coaches Barry along before being subdued by the combined might of the Arrowverse heroes.
Barry is successful in returning to his own timeline, arriving just in time to save Team Flash from a vengeful Despero as he continues to obsessively hunt for the Flash. Reading Barry’s mind, Despero realizes he’s telling the truth but vows to return if he finds that Barry is lying or does descend into villainy. Reuniting with Team Flash, Barry is overjoyed to learn that his life has returned to normal and that Joe is no longer dead, with Thawne’s machinations apparently undone. However, Thawne has survived the destruction of the Reverse-Flashpoint, now dressed in a version of the Reverse-Flash costume resembling Barry’s, and vows that his latest showdown with Barry has only just begun.
To see the Reverse-Flash ruin Barry’s life, The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8pm EST/PST on The CW, with new episodes available to stream the following day on The CW App.
