WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Kung Fu Season 1, Episode 13, “Transformation,” which aired Wednesday on The CW.

Kung Fu Season 1 has revolved around the legend behind eight ancient weapons that, combined held a mythical power capable of shifting the balance of power in the world. Nicky Shen has learned that her family is far more connected to the weapons than she initially thought, and, back in China where she first learned of the legend and trained in martial arts, she prepares for a final showdown with Zhilan over the weapons’ mystical potential stemming from their magical forge.

While Zhilan is outnumbered by the armed monks guarding the monastery and the mythical forge it is built on top of, the villain has the situation well in hand, unfazed by being surrounded. Revealing that the prophecy dictates someone requiring the presence of a guardian like Nicky to enter the forge, Zhilan coerces her cooperation by showing that she has Nicky’s family under constant surveillance and ready to strike on her command. Forced to comply, Nicky opens the forge by solving an elaborate puzzle system on its door, though Zhilan is shocked that the magical energy empowering the forge has gone noticeably absent.

Recalling ancient myths that Pei-Ling told her linked the mystical weapons, Nicky has Althea take a quick break from her wedding to Dennis to hack into geospatial satellites and try to find a nearby location where the energy may be stored. Nicky takes the opportunity to warn her siblings about the impending danger facing the family in a coded message, with Althea picking up on it and having Evan Hartley bring in the police to apprehend Zhilan’s gunmen. Outmaneuvered, Zhilan is at the mercy of Nicky and monks again, but the standoff is interrupted as Russell Tan arrives at the monastery to avenge the apparent murder of his son.

In the confusion, Russell and his men seize the weapons for themselves, with Zhilan and Nicky each individually in pursuit as they travel to the location of the forge’s energy. Frustrated when the guardian of the forge’s energy refuses to transfer the power to the mythical weapons, Russell kills her just as Nicky and Zhilan each arrive at the site, with their own connection to the weapons’ legacy causing magical feedback that renders both women unconscious and facing visions of the ones they each love in an altered, surreal world. This culminates in a vision of Pei-Ling guiding Zhilan and Nicky back to the forge to determine the fate of the weapons’ energy.

Both women awaken back the site of the stored energy, deciding to fight to determine what becomes of the ancient powers they are poised to inherit. After Zhilan wounds Henry, Nicky decides to expend the energy to turn the tables in her fight against Zhilan, gaining the upper end as the magic has now been unleashed in the world. Defeated, Zhilan asks for Nicky to finish her off with the mythical sword, but she is spared and taken in by the Chinese authorities before returning the sword to the monastery in a tribute to Pei-Ling.

Nicky returns home to her relieved parents, while Althea reveals her sister’s martial arts destiny to Dennis before the newly married couple sets out together for their honeymoon. As Evan begins to investigate Russell Tan beginning to make criminal in-roads in the California Bay Area, Russell is seen visiting his son Kerwin, who actually survived being brutally attacked by Zhilan. As Russell vows revenge on Nicky and to seize her powers for himself, Nicky and Henry enjoy a date night back home as the fruits of Nicky’s magical decision begin to blossom in San Francisco.

For those looking to continue watching Nicky’s story unravel, Kung Fu has already been renewed for Season 2 at The CW.
