Back in July of this year, we reported on Scarlett Johansson’s decision to sue Disney after their unexpected decision to debut “Black Widow” on Disney Plus at the same time movie was released in theaters. Yesterday, only a few days after the first court hearing in Scarlett Johansson’s case against Disney was postponed until March 2022, the Oscar contender and the House of Mouse have apparently reached an agreement – and it seems that the settlement was quite costly for the latter.
“I am happy to have resolved our differences with Disney,” said the actress in a statement. “I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.”
Unlike in recent caustic and embarrassing public relations announcements, Marvel-owner Disney had nothing but praise for the actor who played Natasha Romanoff in nearly ten different MCU flicks.
“I’m very pleased that we have been able to come to a mutual agreement with Scarlett Johansson regarding Black Widow, said Alan Bergman, Chairman, Disney Studios Content. “We appreciate her contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney’s Tower of Terror.”
As is nearly always the case in such matters, neither side disclosed how much money was involved in the settlement. However, insiders tell me that when all is said and done, the agreement will be worth more than $40 million. As a result, if you accept the imaginative accounting I’m putting down, the cash will not be paid in a single lump sum by Disney.
In case you missed it, Black Widow was released on July 9th in theaters across a Delta variant suffering America and on Disney+ for a premium price, which Johansson apparently felt, and Disney eventually agreed, hurt her profit sharing deal with them.
