Food is a universal need for every living creature on the planet. What counts as “food” depends on the species, of course, but for humans, “food” can refer to a huge variety of things. As omnivores, humans can eat a multitude of substances, which means there’s a lot of food out there that can get people – and anime characters – salivating.
While the rambunctious boy who needs a lot of energy is a common trope for anime characters with big appetites, it’s not always as noticeable in female characters. Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece and Goku from Dragon Ball are both guys with famously big appetites, but female characters like Sasha Braus from Attack on Titan are here to give them some competition.
10 Excessive Eating Gets Sasha Into Trouble (Attack On Titan)
One of the first things fans learn about Sasha Braus in Attack on Titan is her occasionally dangerous addiction to food. While it might be due to her background as a hunter from Dauper Village, Sasha also seems to get a lot of stress relief from eating. Her desire for food is so strong that she’s impulsively stolen from the infantry food stores – and even the kitchen – while she was still a trainee, which landed her in hot water with her superiors.
9 Kagura Is Rarely Seen Without Her Favorite Snack (Gintama)
Rice and sukonbu (pickled seaweed) seem to be Kagura’s favorite foods, but she’s been seen eating a lot more than that in Gintama. As a member of the Yato tribe, Kagura has an insatiable appetite that allows her to eat large amounts of food with no issues. Some episodes of Gintama feature Kagura eating until she’s several times her usual size, and she’s even been seen eating a giant takoyaki ball. Luckily, she’s energetic enough to burn off all those extra calories.
8 Fuu Once Ate Over Twenty-Seven Bowls Of Anago-Don (Samurai Champloo)
Immediately before surrendering their swords as entry fees for an eating contest in Samurai Champloo, Fuu Kasumi notes that she, Mugen, and Jin are “always hungry,” so winning the competition should be a snap.
Only Fuu, however, is able to last up to the final rounds of the eating contest before she accidentally signals her defeat. Anago-don is a Japanese dish consisting of grilled eel over rice, and it’s pretty delicious, so it’s not too surprising that Fuu was able to keep eating.
7 Eating Is One Of Usagi’s Self-Professed Favorite Hobbies (Sailor Moon)
Usagi Tsukino’s love for food is made obvious early on in Sailor Moon, as one of her earliest dilemmas focuses on stress over gaining a little extra weight… to which her family comments that she eats more than she exercises. There are numerous scenes throughout Sailor Moon displaying Usagi indulging in a variety of different foods, including street foods, sweets, and even cup ramen. Usagi is a girl who enjoys eating and isn’t shy about it, and she’s even admitted that eating makes her happy.
6 Hanajima’s Predilection For Food Is Hard To Miss (Fruits Basket)
Although Saki Hanajima is a background character in Fruits Basket, she does have a handful of appearances, and in most of them, she’s eating. In fact, Hanajima’s thoughts seem to frequently involve Tohru or food. Perhaps the most comical instance of Hanajima’s appetite is during her class’s Cinderella play, during which Hanajima is seen eating grilled meat and fried rice while she’s on stage, playing the role of Cinderella. The way she nonchalantly munches on food with no regard for the social context is endlessly entertaining.
5 Miaka Fell For A Food-Based Trap More Than Once (Fushigi Yuugi)
Eating large amounts of food is one of Miaka Yuki’s biggest running gags in Fushigi Yuugi, and she’s called a glutton by other characters on several occasions. Miaka’s gluttony is so prevalent that her enemies are able to lure her into traps using food, and she once got lost after smelling delicious food and wandering off in search of its source. And she’s even had dreams of being surrounded by her favorite foods, which only accentuates her insatiable appetite.
4 Food Is Constantly On Elma’s Mind (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)
In the distant past of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Elma played her part as a Harmony faction dragon by living peacefully amongst humans and protecting their right to worship the gods… but she did so by acting as a god herself.
Elma’s primary motivation in this endeavor was the fact that humans typically give offerings of food and drink to those they believe are gods, especially in ages past. Even in modern times, Elma is still quite fond of human cuisine, and it’s pretty easy to bribe or motivate her with tasty treats.
3 Kyoko’s Love For Food Is Tied To Her Backstory (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)
While Kyoko Sakura’s father was struggling to attract others to his religious teachings, their family fell into hard times and couldn’t afford much food in Puella Magi Madoka Magica. As a result, Kyoko became quite attached to food and especially despises wastefulness, since she lived with food insecurity. Kyoko’s psychological attachment to food drives her to eat frequently, and she’s almost always seen with a snack. She’s also not above stealing in order to procure the food she needs to live.

Both of the Anarchy sisters were kicked out of Heaven for indulging in sin, and Stocking Anarchy’s particular transgression relates to gluttony. Stocking loves most food in Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, but her favorite type of food is sweets. She has an online blog where she reviews the different sweets she tries, and she even signed up for a decades-long waiting list to get her hands on some legendary specialty pudding. Too bad Panty accidentally ate it when it finally arrived.

By the same token, however, Lawrence is able to use Holo’s appetite to his advantage if he needs her special skills in his dealings with other merchants. Depending on the circumstances, Lawrence may or may not excite Holo with stories of special local delicacies he’s eaten while on the road, such as the famous honey pickled peaches that made Holo literally drool.
