Santa Clause Disney+ Series Is Incomplete Without Bernard

The Santa Clause is returning on Disney+ as a limited series, presenting the perfect opportunity for a long-awaited reunion.

After well over a decade, The Santa Clause franchise is making a comeback on the Disney+ streaming service. Tim Allen will be reprising his role as Scott Calvin, who becomes Santa Claus in the film series. The revival will likely see more returns of mainstay cast members as well. However, one critical question remains: will Bernard the Elf (David Krumholtz) make an appearance?

The newest series, according to Variety, focuses on Scott Calvin finding the next generation of Santa Claus: “He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole.” It goes on to state, “With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.” With a conflict centered around the challenges of life in the North Pole and finding the newest Santa Claus, Bernard would be a valuable asset when it comes to finding a replacement. After all, he is the one that primarily advised Scott when he became Santa Claus the first time.

Bernard and Santa Clause

Bernard had consistently been a trusted advisor to Scott, serving as a partner and main character in the first two Santa Clause films. In The Santa Clause, Bernard serves as one of the first points of contact and Head-Elf for Scott when he is officiated as the new Santa Claus after the former fell off a roof. In The Santa Clause 2, Bernard functions in a similar role as a trusted associate to Scott, being the one to inform him of the “Mrs. Clause,” which states that Calvin must be married by Christmas Eve or Christmas will cease.

Among the jolly elves of the North Pole, Bernard was the most different one. He appeared physically older and was notably more serious, being in charge of managing both the elves and workshop. However, it’s common knowledge for fans of The Santa Clause trilogy that Bernard did not make an appearance in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. The final movie in the franchise featured Jack Frost attempting to usurp Scott’s position as Old Saint Nick.

Actor David Krumholtz, who portrayed Bernard, previously stated that the reason for him not appearing in the third film was due to shooting conflicts with another series he had starred in, Numbers. According to Bustle, however, recent interviews with Krumholtz from December 2021 point out that there was more to it than that. The actor revealed that “They sent me the script; I had a pretty significant role. We did work out the schedule… And it was all set to go. But I would say that the character got devalued a little bit and I couldn’t in good conscience do it.”

The latest interview supplies long-awaited answers for fans that had missed the character in what was previously the final installment of The Santa Clause franchise. As pointed out by Krumholtz, Bernard the Elf previously had an important role in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. Plot-wise, it’s unclear as to why Bernard didn’t make an appearance, as it goes unmentioned in the film. It’s only stated that Curtis, former assistant elf to Bernard, took up his position as Head-Elf. As a major character in the first two films, it’s surprising that he wouldn’t make even a small cameo.

The Santa Clause has become a staple holiday movie that celebrates the Christmas season.  Interestingly, Krumholtz did this interview just weeks before the official announcement of the return of The Santa Clause. With Allen serving as the lead and executive producer for the limited series set to hit Disney+, Bernard could make a reappearance if he finds that his character is more in line with how Krumholtz sees Bernard.
