Sandra Bullock described what it was like pulling leeches off of Channing Tatum’s butt while shooting a scene for their upcoming romantic adventure comedy The Lost City.
Bullock told Variety that Tatum was “naked as a jaybird” while filming the comedic set piece, adding, “We had his trainer in the budget. We had his blanched chicken and broccoli in the budget. He would be up at 4, going for a swim in the ocean. He worked so hard for a comedic moment that he knew needed to look and be a certain way. And I spent the remainder of the day just looking at it all, having long monologues to his bits and pieces.”
Tatum noted, “We didn’t have any live leeches on set. We had a man gluing rubber leeches to my butt. That was my second day on set, and I had to be buck naked. I was like, ‘Hi, my name is Chan. I’ll be naked today.’ Everyone is trying to look up and away.”
The funny sequence was teased in the trailer for The Lost City, which tells the story of a romance novelist (Bullock) who finds herself on an adventure not unlike the ones in her books after getting kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who hopes she can lead him to the ancient treasure from her latest story. When her handsome cover model (Tatum) sets out to rescue her, the two are thrust into a cutthroat expedition through the jungle.
Directed by brothers Adam and Aaron Nee, the supporting cast of The Lost City includes Patti Harrison (Raya and the Last Dragon), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Trolls World Tour), Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Oscar Nuñez (The Office). The film also features a surprise cameo by Brad Pitt, who recently worked alongside Bullock in the upcoming action thriller Bullet Train. The Nee brothers co-wrote the screenplay with Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) and Dana Fox (Cruella), based on an idea pitched by Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon.
Elsewhere in the aforementioned Variety interview, Tatum shared new details about the cancelation of his planned Gambit movie, revealing that it would have been a “raunchy” Deadpool-esque solo film based on the X-Men mutant. The project was called off by Disney when the studio merged with 21st Century Fox, which had spent years developing the film alongside Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin.
Tatum revealed he was so “traumatized” when his passion project was scrapped that he’s been unable to watch any Marvel movies since. “I loved that character. It was just too sad,” he said. “It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him.”
The Lost City hits theaters on March 25.
